Chapter 88
Chapter 88
Sharon felt her head buzz.
Her lips quivered as she stared at Natalie, disbelief written all over her face. She said. “There’s no way. Sierra would never say something like that.”
To Sharon, Sierra was just a kid desperate for family: a little messed up inside, sure, but clueless about how to hold onto it.
Sharon thought, ‘No way Sierra would say something like that, not the way Natalie described.
Under the sheets, Natalie clenched the white bedsheet in her fists, twisting it up until it looked completely ruined.
She thought, ‘What does Sharon even mean by that?
‘I’m lying here in a hospital bed, and Sharon doesn’t even care. She is just questioning me.
‘After everything I’ve done, why is it always Sierra they choose over me?’
A flash of hatred and venom glinted in Natalie’s eyes.
She looked at Sharon, disappointment written all over her face. She said, “Mom, are you saying you think I’m exaggerating and badmouthing Sierra?”
Sharon froze for a second.
When she saw the tears welling up in Natalie’s eyes, it finally dawned on her. She hurried to explain, “Nat, that’s not what I meant.”
But Natalie just lowered her head, and the tears she’d been holding back finally spilled over, splashing onto the white bedsheet and soaking it through.
Natalie said, “Ever since you and Dad brought Sierra home, she’s been picking on me. That’s why I started holding a grudge and wanted someone to mess with Sierra’s dog.
“But I never thought my friend would go that far. I know I did something wrong, and I’ve already paid for it. I just want to make it up to Sierra.
“Today, I told Sierra I’d do anything if she’d just forgive me. But she told me to jump off the overpass, and even let the security guards gang up on me.”
Natalie choked up, her voice barely above a whisper. She added, “Sierra said if I jumped, she’d never hate me again.”
Sharon’s face went ashen. She said, “No way. Nat, don’t let it get to you. Sierra was just lashing out because she felt hurt. She didn’t really mean it. There are other ways we can make things right with her.”
A flicker of suppressed hatred glinted in Natalie’s eyes.
But she covered it up in the next heartbeat. She asked, “Really?” A mix of confusion and excitement flashed across her face.
She lowered her gaze, looking all meek and obedient. She said, “I managed to land a major project recently. I want to give it to Sierra as an apology.”
Sharon hesitated.
Sierra had already quit showbiz. She probably wasn’t ever coming back to acting.
Seeing Sharon hesitate, Natalie let a sly smile slip. She said, “Sierra only quit the industry because she was pissed at me. But

this project I’m handing her?
“It’s from Brock. The guy’s a legend; every show he touches turns to gold. Trust me, Sierra won’t be able to say no
Sharon’s brow furrowed. She said, “I’m not so sure Sierra will accept it.”
Natalie let out a helpless sigh and said, “But this is a chance I fought tooth and nail to get for Sierra. And come on, working at WonderWild Zoo is filthy and exhausting. Sierra’s way too spoiled to handle that.
“Why don’t we just sign the contract on her behalf first, then hit her with the surprise later? She’ll be thrilled.”
As she spoke, a dark glint flashed in Natalie’s eyes.
Brock was a legend in the business, but he was also infamous for being totally twisted. Countless stars had been chewed up and spat out by him.
Natalie thought, ‘Once Sierra set foot on that crew, endless torment would be waiting for her.
‘I can’t wait for that day to arrive.’
At WonderWild Zoo, in the staff dorm, a little sparrow perched on the second-floor window, nibbling on the rice Sierra had given her.
Once her belly was all round and full, the sparrow hopped onto Sierra’s shoulder, ‘fluffed up her feathers, and chirped, “Sierra, that’s how it went down. I saw it myself. Natalie swapped out the files on Jonathan’s desk!”
Sierra had just finished washing up.
Payton was staring intently at the little bird perched on Sierra’s shoulder, eyes gleaming with excitement. He was sizing up the bird with his beak, clearly itching to make a move.
This time, Sierra hadn’t taken Payton with her when she went out, but luckily, Thomas had been at the zoo every day, taking Payton along for patrols.
As soon as Sierra got back, Thomas couldn’t wait to bring Payton back to her.
Now, Payton was officially the head of the security team, and even Ryan had to answer to him.
But honestly, Payton and Ryan probably hadn’t even met yet. Sierra had to admit, she was dying to see Ryan’s face when he realized his boss was actually a dog.
Sierra listened to the sparrow’s report, caught Payton eyeing the bird, and, without missing a beat, gently closed Payton’s jaws.
Then she turned to the sparrow and said, “Appreciate it, buddy. But I still need you to keep tabs on Natalie. If anything goes down, just fly over and tell me.”
The sparrow bobbed its head, all excited. It said, “No trouble at all. Getting intel for you is the best thing that has ever happened to me as a bird.
“Plus, you’ve been feeding my friends and me so much. We’re gonna have an awesome winter. It is only right for us to pay you back.”
The sparrow zipped out the window, off to keep watch on Natalie.
Payton watched the sparrow zip out the window, his eyes full of regret.

Chapter 88
He thought, ‘I still haven’t gotten to taste what sparrow is like!
Payton let out a long sigh, then looked up with his icy blue eyes and saw Sierra standing there, hands on her hips, just silently watching him.
Payton’s eyes darted around, still having no clue what he’d done wrong, but out of instinct, he tucked his tail between his legs and gave Sierra his best puppy eyes, trying to look as cute and innocent as possible.
For some reason, Payton could feel his heart pounding in his chest.
He thought, ‘Come on, dog brain, work with me here. What did I do wrong?
‘I haven’t wrecked Sierra’s place lately. It’s all been at Thomas’s house. No way Thomas would rat me out to Sierra that quick, right?
‘Can’t be about the trash cans, right?
‘Wait, did Sierra catch me sneaking into the fridge in the middle of the night?’
Payton’s ears pinned back, and the more he thought about it, the more anxious he got. He flopped down on the floor, legs splayed wide, showing off his pink belly, his tail spinning like a propeller as he let out a pitiful whine.
He whimpered, “Sierra, my bad. I shouldn’t have wrecked Thomas’s house.”
Sierra raised an eyebrow, her anger boiling.
She thought, ‘Seriously? Not only does this mutt wreck my place, but now he’s out there trashing other people’s homes, too.
‘I haven’t been home in months, so Payton has definitely gotten up to more than just a little mischief.
Sure enough, after Sierra put the pressure on him, Payton blurted out every last thing: stuff he should’ve kept to himself and even things he probably shouldn’t have done at all.
Honestly, Payton was kind of an airhead. He never once questioned whether Sierra could understand him.
倒
He just believed Sierra always got what he was saying, because the two of them had this telepathic bond, like they were always on the same wavelength.
Payton was squealing like a stuck pig while Sierra kicked his butt, and his ear splitting cries brought the whole staff running to see what the hell was going on.
When they saw Payton getting punished, everyone just gathered around like they were watching the drama unfold. Some even started piling on, snitching on all the trouble Payton had caused.
Now Payton was getting it even worse.
