Chapter 89

After Sierra gave Payton a good beating, he instantly became much more well-behaved.

Since Sierra didn’t have any assignments outside the zoo these days, she continued with the animals’ desensitization training as usual.

Payton sat obediently nearby, but whenever Sierra reached out to pet another animal, he couldn’t help but get jealous.

When he got really worked up, he’d even try to act tough, like a rabbit challenging an eagle.

But wild animals were not to be messed with. Payton got ridden and beaten by a monkey, chased around the yard by a tiger. and finally, the golden python, annoyed by his noise, gave him a death roll.

Payton was so scared that he thought he was about to be sent back to the factory, and he never dared to mess with those animals again.

Sierra had pretty much mastered the Complete Surgery Guide that the System gifted her. Her progress bar was already past 80%. Once she hit 100%, she could apply all that advanced surgical know-how in real life, and Quickie’s surgery would go off without a hitch.

Sierra couldn’t help but let out a long sigh of relief.

Everything was finally coming together. Even though she was worn out, she felt truly fulfilled.

Before she knew it, October rolled around. The weather in Amberty was cooling, a gentle autumn breeze bringing a chill to

the air.

The staff at the elephant conservation center in Yondeland started reaching out to her.

Pip’s injuries had stabilized, and he was ready to be transferred to WonderWild Zoo.

The staff member’s voice carried a hint of envy as he said, “Ms. Sterling, Pip has really missed you lately. After you left, he’d sometimes refuse to cooperate with treatment, but as soon as he saw your photo or video, he’d behave himself immediately.

“And it’s like he actually understands us. Every time we tell him that if he cooperates, he can see you sooner, he stays well- behaved for a long time!”

As Sierra listened, she instantly pictured Pip’s adorable little self.

She explained, “Elephants have amazing memories. I’ve rescued Pip twice before, so he definitely remembers me.”

When she finished, she could hear the envy in the staff member’s voice./

After all, in this line of work, they all wanted the animals to be close to them.

It was honestly the best feeling ever!

After Sierra and the staff member set the date for Pip’s arrival, she hung up the phone,

Thinking she still hadn’t cashed out the tips from her last live stream of the Kaelenridge Sheep migration, Sierra took a quick look at her phone.

Her inbox was flooded with DMs: mostly brands wanted to collaborate, and some were asking her to sign up for live- streaming deals.

Sierra didn’t even hesitate before turning them all down.

$5 vouchers

The tips from the past two months totaled a whopping 1 million. After handling all the taxes and deductions, Sierra transferred the money straight to Thomas, asking him to go through the official channels and donate the entire amount to the Kaclenridge Conservation Center.

For the conservation center, that money was only enough to cover one or two patrols. But for a place always short on resources, it was a lifesaver. If they budgeted carefully, it could last them at least half a year to a year.

Just as Sierra was lost in thought, a WhatsApp message popped up at the top of her phone.

The sender’s username was SadFootbath, and their profile picture was a cat dressed like an emperor, looking all high and mighty.

What really caught Sierra’s attention was that she checked their chat history. They hadn’t exchanged a single message since they added each other as friends.

Just as Sierra was about to ask who it was, the other person sent over a meme of a minion squatting on the ground.

The next second, the minion meme was retracted and replaced with a cute Teletubbies sticker.

SadFootbath texted: [Heard you’re back. Got time for dinner?]

After hesitating for a bit, Sierra replied: [Who are you?]

The other person went quiet for a moment.

Then another meme popped up: [No one sees a fish cry, no one sees a monkey cry.]

But it vanished in a flash.

Then another meme popped up: [Kinda wanna tear up right now.]

And that one got deleted just as quickly.

The next meme was: [I’m totally not sad.]

But it vanished again.

Sierra blinked, confused.

Sad Footbath kept typing, deleting, and sending memes, only to retract them one after another. After three quick deletes, he finally sent a message: [It’s me, Elliot. You free for dinner tomorrow at eight?]

Sierra stared at the username “Sad Footbath” and the emperor cat avatar, falling into deep thought.

She thought, ‘I really did get Elliot into trouble last time, and I did promise to buy him dinner. After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to say yes.

She replied: [Okay.]

Elliot quickly sent over the address and private room info.

After Sierra replied with a sticker, Elliot went radio silent. Sierra thought, ‘Guess he’s just not much of a talker.

Sierra put her phone away and dove back into grinding her progress on the Complete Surgery Guide.

It was the next evening. Sierra showed up at the spot Elliot mentioned, arriving a full thirty minutes early.

She wore a black turtleneck dress, her dark hair swept back into a neat ponytail, a silver heart-shaped necklace resting on her chest, and an old-money-style reddish-brown coat draped over her shoulders. Her tall frame and delicate makeup made’

her look striking and vibrant.

The place was a privately owned restaurant. Sierra wasn’t picky about food or where she stayed, but even though she’d never been here before, she knew it was a hotspot for the rich and famous.

As soon as she walked in, the crystal chandelier overhead bathed the entrance in dazzling light.

A waiter in a crisp white suit walked up and greeted her politely, “Ms. Sterling, your private room is ready. Please come with

me.”

Sierra raised an eyebrow and asked, “You know who I am?”

The waiter smiled and said, “Mr. Paterson gave us your photo when he booked the table. He’s already inside waiting for you.”

Hearing that, Sierra just shrugged it off.

She thought, ‘I used to be in the entertainment industry, so it’s no big deal that Elliot has a picture of me.

But she hadn’t expected Elliot to actually arrive before she did.

The waiter swung open the door to the private room. Warm light spilled over the ornate carved beams and lavish furnishings, making everything gleam. The tableware was laid out with flawless precision, every detail screaming “luxury.”

Elliot was in a perfectly tailored suit, leaning back casually in a leather chair. His hair was slicked back, sharp features and thin lips set beneath a high nose bridge.

The faint, careless smile on his face made it clear he wasn’t the type you could just walk up to.

He was the textbook definition of a CEO, right down to the uniform, assuming one could somehow ignore his painfully awkward username and those absurd memes.

Sierra bit back a smile, trying to keep a straight face as she walked over.

“Have a seat,” Elliot said coolly, handing her the menu. He said, “Go ahead and order.”

Elliot was direct, and Sierra didn’t think anything of it. After all, she was here to make up for last time.

Sierra ordered her food and handed the menu back to the waiter.

Once the waiter left, it was just Sierra and Elliot in the private room.

Sierra spoke up first, “Sorry about last time, Mr. Paterson. I really wanted to treat you to dinner, but I’ve been swamped with work and out of town, so I kept putting it off.”

Elliot sat up a little straighter and nodded. He said, “My mom mentions you a lot. Your job sounds really interesting.”

“Thanks for understanding, Mr. Paterson,” Sierra replied.

They soon found themselves deep in conversation.

Elliot was surprisingly sharp. Even though he gave off a cold, distant vibe, he was actually humble and polite, and he was even quicker to catch on to internet memes and pop culture thah Sierra was.

When they started talking about things outside of work, she noticed his eyes lit up with genuine interest.

Sierra thought, ‘No wonder he’s got a whole stash of those weird memes.

‘It all makes sense now.

‘No wonder Vivian always jokes about him jerk. He’s into everything except work and studying.

“That whole aloof, cold persona? Pretty sure he’s just faking it.’

Sierra saw right through him, but she played along.

Elliot had no clue that all the effort he’d put into his cool-guy persona had already been busted by Sierra. He cleared his throat, lowered his voice, and said, “If you ever need anything, Ms. Sterling, just let me know.”

Before Sierra could answer, there was a knock at the door. After a quick call from outside, “Food’s here”, two waitresses came in carrying trays.

“Sir, ma’am, your order is all here. Enjoy your meal,” one of the waitresses said with a smile.

As they finished setting the table and were about to leave, one of the waitresses caught sight of Sierra, and her face lit up with surprise.

The waitress called out, “Sierra! After all these years, I can’t believe I’d run into you here.”

After that, the waitress gave Elliot a once-over, then arched her brow at Sierra with a teasing look.

Oddly enough, the waitress’s eyes flashed with a hint of contempt.
