Chapter 90

Chapter 90

The waitress’s gaze was blunt and obvious.

Sierra only noticed her when she suddenly came over and started talking.

The waitress was rocking a white shirt and a bodycon skirt, her face done up with flawless makeup.

Sierra narrowed her eyes, giving her a once-over.

The waitress didn’t even notice the awkward vibe. Her coworker, realizing things were getting weird, hurried off to get the

manager.

Even after her coworker left, the waitress stayed put, not even noticing Sierra’s frown after she finished talking.

Seeing Sierra stay silent, the waitress thought Sierra didn’t recognize her and quickly said, “Sierra, don’t you remember me? It’s Wendy. We grew up in the same village. It’s only been a few years, and you already don’t recognize me!”

Wendy was totally caught up in the excitement of seeing an old friend and kept going, “It’s been three or four years since you went off to college, right? You’ve really made it, way better than me!”

As Wendy spoke, her eyes kept drifting over to Elliot. She leaned in close to Sierra and whispered, “So, is this your sugar daddy?”

Wendy thought, ‘Anyone who could afford to eat here had to be pulling in six figures a month. The guy oozes money and power, and Sierra has actually managed to snag a sugar daddy like him.

Wendy was flat-out jealous.

She and Sierra were from the same village. Back then, Sierra was always covered in dirt, but even so, everyone still wanted to hang out with her.

David and Elouise never cared about Sierra. They figured she’d drop out and start working as soon as she finished elementary school. But Sierra trekked more than thirty miles of mountain roads just to turn David and Elouise in to the

authorities.

Middle school was mandatory, so David and Elouise had to grit their teeth and send Sierra off to school, even though they hated it. Of course, Sierra still got her share of beatings and scoldings during that time.

Wendy could still remember the worst of it, right before Sierra graduated from middle school. They were in the same class, and Sierra was so well-liked that all the teachers and classmates pooled their money to cover her exam fees.

Wendy thought to herself, ‘What’s the use of a girl from the countryside getting into high school? With a family like Sierra’s, she’d probably be married off by the time she was fifteen or sixteen anyway.

But Sierra refused to accept her fate. At fifteen, she got into the top high school in the province, but her family couldn’t afford the tuition, so David and Elouise arranged a marriage for her.

Wendy had seen Sierra fight back against David and Elouise plenty of times, but this time was unforgettable.

Back then, Sierra was just a scrawny fifteen-year-old, but she went absolutely feral. She grabbed a sickle and threatened to take out David, Elouise, and the groom’s family.

She wasn’t tall or strong like she was now, and her struggle was in vain. In the end, she wound up in the hospital, and the whole mess even brought the police in.

Two months later, covered in wounds but finally free, Sierra made her escape from that suffocating village and headed nearly two hundred miles away to the city, ready to start her new life as a student.

After that, Sierra just vanished from everyone’s life.

Wendy was eaten up with jealousy.

She thought, ‘How come Sierra, who had nothing, ended up doing better than me?’

Wendy thought about her own life. After finishing middle school, she spent three years selling clothes in town. She got married, then divorced, and after bouncing around for years, she finally ended up here. Her looks were the only reason she managed to get by.

But now, looking back, that girl everyone thought was doomed to a miserable fate was strutting around in designer clothes, coming and going from upscale restaurants like she owned the place. Just thinking about it made Wendy feel bitter inside.

Wendy kept talking without a care, completely missing the frost in Sierra’s eyes and the deadly look Elliot was giving her.

Just then, the coworker who’d gone to get the manager came back, with a man in his forties trailing behind her.

The manager’s face went ghostly pale the moment he saw Elliot, and he stammered, “M-Mr. Paterson.”

Elliot’s dark eyes looked frosted over, chilling the air around him.

His gaze was icy, and his tone gave nothing away. He demanded, “Is this how you train your staff?”

The manager instantly bowed his head, cold sweat beading on his forehead.

He shot Wendy a nasty look, grabbed her arm, and barked, “You’re supposed to serve the food, not mess with the guests! Apologize, now!”

Elliot was a regular at this place, and more importantly, he was tight with the owner.

Today, Elliot had actually shown up two hours early just to wait for Sierra, and he was so nervous he’d hit the bathroom more times than the manager could even count.

The manager had never seen Elliot so worked up over anyone before.

The manager thought, ‘If things go south today, every single waiter, hell, even me, would be out of a job.

Wendy was so freaked out by the manager’s glare that her lips started to tremble. She looked at Sierra with pleading eyes, hoping she’d speak up for her.

But Sierra acted like Wendy wasn’t even there. Unbothered, she leisurely cut into her steak, not even acknowledging Wendy’s existence.

Wendy started to panic.

Meanwhile, a surge of anger bubbled up inside her.

She thought, ‘Seriously, Sierra’s just some abandoned country bumpkin. She only got to the city a few years before me, so what’s she got to be so smug about?’

Wendy said, “Sierra, please, just tell the manager we know each other.”

She grabbed Sierra’s arm and gave it a desperate shake. The knife and fork in Sierra’s hand scraped across the plate with a screech that cut through the air.

Wendy froze, and the whole room went dead silent.

Elliot sat with his long legs crossed, one arm resting coolly on the back of his chair. His stare was even more piercing than Wendy’s had been earlier: cold, direct, and impossible to ignore.

Chapter 90

Wendy felt completely exposed under Elliot’s gaze, as if every flaw she had was on display. She wished she could just disappear.

Finally, Elliot said, “Fire this waitress immediately. And have her apologize to my friend, right now

Wendy’s eyes went wide in shock.

She thought. Why should I be fired for just talking to Sierra? I barely said anything, and now this guy wants me gone? What did I even do?’

“Quit jumping around and being annoying. Just apologize and get out,” Elliot said, not even bothering to hide his impatience. He added, “There are cameras in here, so if you don’t apologize, I’ll call the cops.”

With that, Elliot actually pulled out his phone, ready to dial 911.

Wendy’s mind just shut down. She couldn’t even think straight.

She looked at Sierra with panicked, pleading eyes. She said, “Sierra, did your friend get the wrong idea? I was just surprised to see you and wanted to say hi, that’s all!”

Sierra gave Wendy a quick glance.

It took her a long moment to remember who Wendy even was. After all these years, and with all that makeup, Wendy looked almost like a stranger. Sierra had to really think to figure out who she was.

But Sierra never had a good impression of Wendy.

Sierra said coldly, “Didn’t you just call my friend my sugar daddy? If there’s a misunderstanding, go explain it to the police.”

Wendy froze, totally shell-shocked.

Even the manager was left gaping in disbelief.

He snapped, “Wendy, do you even have a brain? Ms. Sterling isn’t just some celebrity. She’s working at the zoo now! And you go around making up dirty gossip about her and Mr. Paterson? Seriously, what is wrong with you?”

He nearly blew a fuse, sucking in a sharp breath. He demanded, “Apologize, now. Then get

out.”

The manager thought, ‘How did someone this brainless even get hired?

‘Luckily, this place is owned by one of Elliot’s best friends. If it had been anyone else, the restaurant would’ve been toast in

half an hour.’

The manager looked at Wendy like she was a total jinx, wishing he could just kick her out right then and there.
