Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 91

Chapter 91

Chapter 91

Wendy was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Seeing Sierra doing so well these days, Wendy was seething. Back in grade school, Sierra had been flat broke, nothing in her lunchbox but thin rice gruel and a few pickles, while Wendy always had sandwich money and a bag of chips.

Now, the tables had turned. Wendy was the one struggling to get by.

What made it sting even more was that Sierra had some real status now. Even the manager looked up to her with admiration.

Wendy’s own job might look fancy on the outside, but in reality, it was just endless busywork. She barely had a second to get online, and in her hometown, the internet had only just arrived in the last couple of years.

Compared to a modern city, her place felt like the middle of nowhere.

Even if she’d ever seen Sierra’s billboards or scrolled past her videos online, she was so busy just trying to survive that she never paid them any attention.

Wendy reluctantly lowered herself, hating every second of it as she forced out the words. She said, “Sierra, since we’re both from the same hometown, can’t you just let this slide?”

She was convinced Sierra would let her off the hook.

But she was way off.

Sierra just raised an eyebrow and said flatly. “Don’t want to apologize?”

Wendy looked up, a hopeful look in her eyes.

Next second, Sierra’s lips curled into a faint, beautiful smile. Her voice was gentle, but there was no room for argument. She said, “Then let’s go to the police station.”

With that, Sierra set down her fork and knife.

Elliot didn’t even hesitate. He was already reaching for his phone to call the cops.

“Wait,” Wendy blurted out.

She gave Sierra a long, conflicted look, struggling as she said, “Sierra, I was just so happy to see you that I let slip a few harsh words.

“You used to have it so tough, and seeing you now, it honestly felt like I was dreaming. I never thought you’d make it this big.

Her tone was so nonchalant, like she was just talking about the weather.

The manager was so furious that he couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He cut Wendy off before she could say another word and immediately showered Sierra with apologies.

Wendy might not care about keeping her job, but the rest of them sure did!

The manager was seriously regretting ever hiring someone this clueless.

He thought, ‘One day you’re riding high, the next you’re digging ditches. Does she really not get how fast the wheel can spin?’

Chapter 91

The manager wasn’t really into Sierra’s stuff, but when she quit the industry, it was all anyone could talk about. Even he’d heard the staff gossiping about it nonstop.

And now, after hearing Wendy talk, he realized Sierra had made it big all on her own. The manager thought, ‘If someone. like that is from my hometown, I would be bending over backwards to make a good impression.

‘But what did Wendy do?

‘She actually accused Sierra of having a sugar daddy!

‘Did she really think that was a compliment?

‘And it was obvious that Mr. Paterson is totally into Sierra. He is practically falling over himself to please her, ready to do anything just to get her attention.

‘Wendy just can’t stand the fact that Sierra is doing better than her!

The manager could tell Wendy was beyond saving, so he just stood there quietly, watching her dig her own grave.

As soon as Wendy finished talking, Elliot went straight for his phone and called the cops, with no hesitation at all.

At first, Wendy didn’t take it seriously at all. But when a whole squad of cops showed up with grim faces and dragged her straight to the interrogation room, Wendy started to freak out for real.

Especially when she realized Sierra was actually going after her legally, and she might actually get locked up, Wendy completely panicked.

She pleaded, “I want to see Sierra! Please, let me apologize to her. Won’t that be enough?”

The cop said, “Too late. You had your chance to say sorry back in the mediation room, but you refused. Now you’re scared just because you’re about to get locked up? People like you need the law to teach you a lesson.”

Wendy said, “But I just blurted it out! I swear I didn’t mean any harm!”

The cop said, “If you really didn’t mean it, you wouldn’t have said it in the first place. Anyway, she’s not willing to settle, so our hands are tied. Rules are rules. We have to go by the book.”

But that wasn’t the real reason. Truth was, everyone in their department knew: if it had anything to do with Sierra, they couldn’t afford to mess around. Orders from above: handle her stuff by the book, no exceptions.

But honestly, Wendy’s screw-up wasn’t all that serious, so she just got locked up for three days in the end.

Sierra got the update at the police station, then walked out with Elliot.

She gave him an apologetic look and said, “Sorry you had to skip dinner because of all this. Want to grab a bite now?”

“Sure,” Elliot said.

On the way, Sierra explained, “Wendy and I went to school together, but we were never as close as she likes to pretend. We were in the same class all through elementary and middle school, and honestly, she spent most of that time bullying me.”

Elliot couldn’t help but feel something was off.

All the info he’d found said Sierra was adopted by the Sterling family, but things just weren’t adding up now.”

Clearly, there was more to the story than he’d managed to dig up so far.

Elliot kept a straight face and asked, “She bullied you? Did you ever fight back?”

Sierra stared, completely baffled.

Elliot said seriously, “If someone tries to push you around, you can’t just let it slide. Otherwise, they’ll walk all over you and only get worse.”

Some people were just like that. They cozied up to anyone stronger, but treated anyone weaker like dirt.

Wendy always thought she could walk all over Sierra, feeling totally above her.

She’d gotten so used to looking down on Sierra that even now, she didn’t think she’d done anything wrong.

Sierra pressed her lips together. She then said, “Yeah, I got back at her, but I did it on the sly. Wendy still has no clue.”

Elliot was genuinely caught off guard.

He’d been acting all serious, but for a split second, his voice almost cracked. Luckily, he caught himself just in time, convinced he hadn’t let anything slip.

But his eyes were practically sparkling with the thrill of gossip.

Seeing that look in Elliot’s eyes, Sierra’s mood instantly lifted for no reason at all.

Sierra turned her head and dropped her voice, almost whispering. She said, “Back then, with no parents to back me up, I couldn’t risk stepping out of line at school.

“But in elementary school, I had a bunch of friends in my class. So one time, I rallied the crew, and we waited for Wendy outside the school wall. We jumped her with a sack and gave her a good thrashing.”

“At first, Wendy had no clue I was the mastermind. But every time she tried to mess with me, she’d get ambushed as soon as she stepped out of school.

“Eventually, she stopped picking on me. She’d just act all superior, talking down to me like she did today.”

Elliot dropped the cool act, his eyes going wide with gossip-hungry curiosity. He asked, “Wait, so did she ever figure out it was you behind it?”

Sierra grinned, her eyes sparkling. She said, “Did you see her today? Do you really think she’s sharp enough to put two and two together?”

Elliot mulled it over for a moment.

He said, “Guess she really didn’t.”

Sierra smirked and said, “She only figured out half the story. Wendy always thought my friends just had my back, so she never dared to say a word. She just kept all that anger bottled up and sulked in silence.”

Elliot finally put two and two together.

He thought, ‘Wendy’s the type who only goes after people who can’t fight back, but backs off the second someone stands up

to her.

‘She only bullied Sierra as a kid because she knew Sierra had no one in her corner. But when everyone turned on her, Wendy got scared and backed down!

Sure, fighting fire with fire wasn’t really the right thing to do, but when Sierra was a kid, it was the only thing she could think

Elliot said firmly, “Sierra, you did exactly the right thing.”

He thought, ‘If I’d been around back then, I swear I would’ve marched right up and slapped Wendy myself, no hesitation.
