Chapter 92
Chapter 92
As they chatted, Sierra and Elliot found themselves at the night market.
Seeing the endless stream of people, Elliot hesitated for a second, unable to help glancing down at his sharp suit.
Sierra picked up on it right away.
After wasting two hours at the police station, it was already past 10 PM, and most places were closed.
Sierra glanced at Elliot, who looked totally out of place, and was about to say something when he smoothly took off his suit jacket, revealing his chiseled chest and strong, muscular back.
He pushed his shirt sleeves up to his elbows, showing off a Patek Philippe watch. Elliot tilted his head, all serious, and asked, “Where should we eat?”
Sierra was momentarily stunned, then replied, “What do you feel like having?”
Elliot scanned the area, then walked up to a food-truck taco window, grabbed a paper boat, and handed it to Sierra like it was no big deal. He said, “Go ahead, load it up however you want.”
Sierra was so stunned by Elliot’s down-to-earth vibe that she just froze, not reaching for the boat he handed her.
Elliot shot her a confused look, raising an eyebrow. He asked, “What, not into it? We can hit up the stall next door. Their stuff’s good too.”
Sierra blinked. She asked, “Is this your regular spot, Mr. Paterson?”
The way Elliot acted like he owned the place made Sierra certain he came here all the time. Otherwise, how would he know which stall was worth trying?
Elliot was totally oblivious. He said, “Yeah, back in college, I used to drag my buddies out here all the time. I’ve eaten my way down this whole street.”
His voice got quieter and quieter.
Then it hit him: his whole big boss act had just crumbled. He wanted to smack himself for letting that slip.
Elliot started, scrambling to save face.
But Sierra just flashed him a gentle smile, leaving him so dazed he didn’t know which way was up.
Sierra didn’t notice anything off about Elliot’s expression.
Back when she first started college, she was broke as hell. Money was so tight she stretched every penny living off plain white rice and a jar of pickles day after day.
Splurging on a food-truck taco or even a dollar slice was completely out of the question.
Then she got into showbiz and had to watch her figure, so she pretty much said goodbye to all that stuff.
Thinking about it now, it was kind of funny. She’d never even known what a taco tasted like.
Since Elliot said this place was good, no way she was missing out now. She was definitely going to give it a try.
Their tacos were up in no time. Sierra and Elliot claimed a tiny counter ledge in the corner of the food-truck lot, elbows brushing as the nighttime crowd streamed past, music and neon spilling over them from every side.

Elliot ended up swiping his card at the truck window, and Sierra felt a flush of embarrassment.

She’d been the one who swore she’d treat him, yet they never made it to the sit-down place she’d pictured, and a couple of street tacos felt too cheap to count as picking up the tab.
Elliot noticed her hesitation and gave a small smile. He said, “If you really feel bad about it, you can make it up to me next time. But…”
He paused for a couple of seconds, with a touch of mock grievance in his eyes.
Sierra didn’t catch on. She just nodded, thinking he was reminding her not to forget about the meal again.
She promised, “Don’t worry, Mr. Paterson. I won’t forget this time.”
Elliot said, “Actually, I was just wondering if you’ve changed how you saved me in WhatsApp.”
After he said that, he looked kind of bummed out.
Elliot grumbled inwardly, ‘She has had me on WhatsApp for months, but she hasn’t even bothered to message him once. She even asked who I was. Clearly, I am not even on her radar.
‘And the worst part? I have totally forgotten to change my contact name in WhatsApp.’
He’d spend three hours just to look sharp for Sierra, only to almost blow his cover because of his silly contact name.
Elliot felt like he could cry a river.
Seeing Elliot with his big boss look, barely holding back tears, Sierra couldn’t help but smile. She said, “Don’t worry, I’ve already changed it.”
She called out his username in her head.
They walked side by side through the packed night market. Sierra, worried someone might recognize her, wore a black mask to stay under the radar.
But even with the mask, the two of them were total head-turners. Their looks and aura made them stand out from the crowd, no matter what.
It was already late, and even though Elliot was reluctant to say goodbye, he said, “Sierra, let me take you home.”
Sierra checked her watch. Since it was getting pretty late and she had to be up early for work tomorrow, she nodded and said, “Okay.”
Just then, Sierra suddenly heard a raspy voice calling out from behind.
The voice called out, “Thief! Stop right there!”
Sierra spun around.
They were standing right at the entrance to the busy night market, people streaming past, but she didn’t spot any commotion or anything unusual in the crowd.
Sierra frowned, puzzled.
Elliot saw Sierra glancing back, and his brows furrowed without him even realizing.
“Sierra, what’s wrong?” he asked.
Sierra figured she probably just imagined it. She said, “Don’t worry about it, let’s just go.”

Just then, the voice rang out again. It said. “Seriously, is anyone gonna step in? Robbery in progress! Somebody grab that guy!”
Sierra froze, her face suddenly turning deadly serious.
She thought, ‘So I wasn’t just hearing things.
‘If it isn’t a person yelling, then, it has to be some animal making a scene.
Sierra glanced back again, searching for the source of the noise. Her gaze quickly locked onto a collared crow flapping clumsily overhead.
The crow was struggling in the air, wings beating wildly as it zeroed in on a panicked-looking man in the crowd.
And then, out of nowhere, it slammed right into him.
