Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Timothy was absolutely thrilled to see Quickie get put in his place.

Sierra watched Timothy’s smug expression and sighed helplessly. She said, “Quickie’s got a bit of a stubborn streak, but honestly, it’s not really his fault. When he was little, his previous owner abused him. He actually snapped his wings, just like

that.”

Timothy’s grin vanished in an instant.

From a certain perspective, Quickie was not really suited to being a pet, and he wouldn’t make it on his own in the wild either.

His whole personality and worldview were shaped by that unhappy childhood.

The only love he ever got was from Sierra, so when he saw Snowy next door being doted on, he immediately thought Sierra’s love for him was being taken away.

That’s why Quickie got so worked up.

Sierra cocked her head and said, “Quickie’s not going to change overnight. He just said it himself. He’s lonely.”

“So what should we do?” Timothy asked.

Sierra’s pink lips moved slightly, and there was a glimmer in her eyes. She said, “Since he’s been spending time in Snowy’s nest lately, I suppose he won’t be feeling so lonely anymore.”

Timothy watched Sierra smirk, his own lips twitching in disbelief. He said, “Quickie’s got such a temper. He’s not gonna get so mad he actually keels over, right?”

Timothy thought, ‘Sierra makes Quickie keep apologizing until Snowy finally forgives him. Honestly, it is pretty rough, but Quickie totally deserves it.’

Timothy didn’t feel bad for Quickie, but Quickie was still a protected animal. If he really did drop dead from anger over this, it’d be bad news for the zoo.

“Don’t worry about it. Animals are way smarter than people think,” Sierra said, picturing Quickie all puffed up, and couldn’t help but laugh. She added, “Quickie knows how to read the room. Half of what you saw was just for show.”

Timothy just stared, speechless. He said, “What a bird trickster!”

There was always some little incident at the aviary every day, but Sierra didn’t really pay much attention to the two birds fighting.

Still, she had her own reasons for deliberately keeping Quickie and Snowy together.

Snowy was much older, and since he’d always lived around humans, he was gentle and honest by nature.

Sierra thought that if Quickie hadn’t insisted on testing the pecking order, Snowy wouldn’t have even bothered with him.

Putting the two birds together wasn’t likely to cause any real problems. And even if there was a scuttle, odds were it’d just be Quickie getting smacked around.

Snowy’s clever. He’d never actually hurt Quickie, so if Quickie ended up taking a few hits, it was no big deal.

Quickie was huddled in the corner, spacing out. He wasn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. There was no way he could

figure out all the tricks Sierra had up her sleeve.

He stared at Snowy, who was resting with his eyes closed in the nest, his eyes brimming with tears, on the verge of crying.

Sierra had told the keeper to pass on a message: Quickie wouldn’t get to see her until he’d earned Snowy’s forgiveness and actually became friends with him.

Quickie wanted to see Sierra, but there was no way he would make friends with Snowy.

All night long, the aviary was filled with Quickie’s pitiful, heartbroken wails, “I am so sad and miserable.”

The next day, Timothy came by to fill Sierra in on what Quickie’s been up to.

Timothy said, “Quickie was squawking all night on the cameras. His voice was all hoarse by the end. At six this morning, he finally shuffled out of his corner and made his way to Snowy’s nest.

“He chattered nonstop for almost an hour, then spent another half hour just pacing around the nest. In the end, Snowy chased him off, and Quickie went right back to the corner to keep sobbing his eyes out.”

Timothy paused, clearly confused. He continued, “But here’s the weird part: he didn’t pull out any feathers this time. Just pacing around Snowy’s nest like that was odd. What was he even up to?”

Sierra glanced at the monitor.

When she saw Quickie scratching at his face with his claw, then bouncing up and down as he circled Snowy’s nest, her lips twitched.

“Quickie was trying to get Snowy to forgive him, but Snowy just ignored him, so he busted out a little dance,” Sierra said. shaking her head in disbelief.

Timothy blinked in confusion. He asked, “Isn’t that a good thing? Why did Snowy still peck him?”

Sierra replied, “Because Quickie was doing a mating dance.”

Day after day went by.

Before she knew it, Saturday had rolled around, and Sierra was still streaming her daily routine at the aviary.

After the initial hype died down, her viewership had settled at around ten thousand people per stream.

During that time, Sierra renegotiated her contract with the platform, switching to a 70/30 split with Sierra taking the lion’s share.

Now, with the tips, her savings, and the generous government subsidies, it was just enough to cover everything.

Early that morning, the truck driver called Sierra to inform her that the truck delivering Pip would arrive tonight.

There was still plenty of time before seven, so after streaming a quick tour around the aviary, Sierra, at her viewers’ urging, found a shady pavilion and started a livestream Q&A.

The first caller was a girl.

The moment she got through, the girl stomped her feet in excitement, then just stared in disbelief, as if she were living in a

dream.

Whenever Sierra started a live call, there’d be hundreds of thousands of viewers online.

All the cat slaves and dog slaves were queuing up for a shot at connecting, and if one actually got picked, it was like hitting the jackpot.

Sierra gave the girl a moment to freak out, and once she’d settled down, Sierra asked, “So, what do you want to ask me?”

The girl nodded like crazy. She hauled a fat orange cat over from the side of her bed and held it up. She said, “Sierra, my cat keeps trying to run outside lately.

“If I didn’t catch him every time, God knows how many times he’d have escaped already.”

The more she talked; the more fired up she got. She just hoisted the cat up by the neck for everyone to see.

On her screen, all the viewers could see was the orange cat giving the biggest side-eye ever.

One viewer commented: [That angle’s a little too wild! Maybe put the cat down. He kinda looks like he’s seen the afterlife.]

Another commented: [Don’t get too worked up, it’s not that deep!]

Someone commented: [Easy, easy. Some cats are just born like this. Judging by this girl’s window, she lives in the countryside. Just let him be an outdoor cat.]

The girl quickly noticed the comments flooding in.

She let out a helpless sigh and said, “I’m not trying to cage him in or anything. I’ve had this cat since he was a kitten, and my whole family absolutely loves him.

“We usually just let him roam around outside, but lately, a lot of cats in our village have been dying, so I’ve had to keep him indoors for his own safety.

“Sierra, can you help me figure out what’s going on?”

Sierra was just about to answer when the chat started throwing out guesses.

One commented: [Maybe he’s spotted some female cats outside?]

Another commented: [Bet he’s in heat.]

The girl quickly explained, “No way, my cat’s already been neutered!”

She tried to prove it by showing his belly, but the cat was having none of it. His legs kicked and squirmed so fast they were just a blur. In the end, she had no choice but to give up, totally defeated.

Sierra glanced at the girl’s username, hesitated for a moment, then said, “Sexy Cockroach Queen, your cat’s a little on the chunky side, so grabbing him by the scruff probably isn’t too comfy for him.

“Why don’t you put him down, and I’ll have a little chat with him, okay?”

The girl nodded eagerly.

Sure enough, once the cat was set down, he didn’t try to run off.

When he heard Sierra’s voice, his amber eyes locked onto the camera.

The cat asked, “Human, you can actually hear me talking?”

Sierra was just about to speak when, out of nowhere, a chubby orange cat’s face suddenly appeared at the girl’s window.

The next second, a chubby orange cat with big cars and a round face jumped up onto the windowsill.

When he realized he couldn’t get in, the cat smooshed his round face against the glass and started meowing pitifully.

What Sierra actually heard was, “Open the door. It’s Kyrie!”
