Chapter 104
Demetri POV
Hacker was top–notch; his skills exceeded our main man’s. I was impressed by the ease with which he broke into the different places I suggested looking into. He never even blinked at the challenge. I thought I heard his whisper, ‘Child’s play‘ and ‘basic rookie training! Maybe for him, but I know a lot of men who are beyond basic training who would stumble over some of the inner linings to the firewalls.
Oddball’s sudden appearance in the room, Gunner and he, headed straight to Cora’s desk and looked over
her shoulder at the screen. I had to look. Hacker, too, got up and walked over, crowding behind her chair to
see what Cora was worried about.
The changes to the route, as Cora has said, motivated the attack on one town at a time rather than being spread out as before. We needed to be one step ahead this time, the next run over just over a week away, plenty of time to get some of my men here. I will call the bike squad, a team of twenty, who all ride motorcycles and can blend in with the club scene. They have been great for undercover work before, but nothing like this. It will challenge them, which would be good for their training.
Cora had the next run schedule set up, showing where delivery vans intersect and where they deviate from their normal route, and Hacker will keep checking each day for any last–minute changes as they learn that their two drivers are missing. I am proud and a little surprised at Cora, and her ability to make these spreadsheets, charts and come up with ideas and temporary solutions, temporary because they can change by the hour. But it was a good start, and the groundwork was immaculate, easy to adjust. I have seen these sorts of spreadsheets before, and know if you’re not competent with the linking and inner workings, this would never develop; it was beyond an Excel spreadsheet style, almost like she wrote her own platform to make these.
I know she runs the business her mother started and makes the decisions in the background, but if she wanted to give up nursing, she could easily run mine. I’m happy to teach her. One day it will be hers, før now, I don’t want to put pressure on her, not while we are still new at the father–daughter stage, and with this going on, and the community work I have yet to look into, she was one very busy woman, just like her mother and father, never stopping long enough to take a decent break. I bet during school holidays, she was working with her mother till she was no more. I could easily visualise them together, giggling, baking those cakes she loved, picking the annual blooms from the garden, and filling the house with their fragrance.
Or was that more my fanciful, wishful thinking?
Did I break that wonderful woman?
Oddball called for a break, before I could phone my team and have Hacker introduced to them, guess later will have to do. I want my men on the road ASAP. The longer the delay, the less time these men will get to get used to their faces and pairing up.
I looked around as we ventured towards the dining hall. It was a large room with lots of chairs, and I

couldn’t see any particular seating ärrangement no standout hierarchy. But the way they gravitated to one of the tables made me think maybe there was hierarchy, made not to look deliberate, to confuse anyone arriving to cause trouble. If they didn’t know who the boss was, this set–up would make it that little bit more difficult and help protect Oddball.
Just as I was about to sit down, an angel walked into the room. ! froze as I watched the woman also stop just inside the doorway, and stare at me, her mouth dropped open, her eyes drinking me in, as I did the
same for her. This woman was the first one to have me take a long look and appreciate what I saw. She was perfect, with flour on her cheek, a stained apron on, a tea towel over her shoulder, a flowery dress that came just above the knees, blue socks and runners on her feet, mousy brown hair, greenish blue eyes, no
makeup, and a kind face.
A woman took her tray and placed it on the table. The woman didn’t even notice, then was pushed out of the door, and I guess to the kitchen. I questioned the table about who she was and, if available, had a new reason to visit this clubhouse: it had nothing to do with business and a lot to do with pleasure. As a widow, I will have to be careful and take this slowly, and get to know her. Maybe Cora can give me more information. Although Cora is not from here, I can have my team write a bio on her, or I can decide later. It might be more fun working it out myself.
Lunch was over before I could finish thinking about how to get to know that woman called Scones. We headed back to Oddball’s office for a group face conference and to talk to the three main clubs that appeared to be targeted. All thoughts of Scones were put behind me as work dominated my mind.
We worked out a plan, and I called my team leader and put him on speaker. Those on FaceTime could hear his voice and ask questions, some questions I had thought of but never voiced, and I was pleased I hadn’t, as it made my men look better for asking, not that they needed it. Still, I felt it broke some ice with the clubs, that know little of me, other than what the tabloids give out, which more often than not, are false or misleading. It’s amusing to read or hear what people thought, what lies they could think up next. If you believed them, I have been married six times, engaged more times than I can remember, and have at least five sons to different ladies. My parents are both alive and living in one of my many homes. Ha, as if they would live in my home, not a chance, it’s been several years since I talked to any of my family. I was
r not interested in their dictatorial ways of ruining my life any more.
We have a plan set. Everyone sounded eager to get it started. My man will send the team, and should get here in a few days, they will use the choppers to bring them close to town, and let them ride in, will make a good spectacle, and from here they can break into teams, we can make a better decision once they are here, because things are changing daily, and who knows what that route shape will take until the day before. Still, we can send the men to the area, and on the day they leave on the route, we have time to set up, as it will take them two or three days to reach town from the depot. Hacker will watch for any changes of direction, now that he had locked into their tracking system, and can send out drones when the delivery vans are closer to the area the men believe was the best place to hide and shoot out tyres, we have some marked places where complaints have been made before, but that might have been testing the area of the best place, the drones will help pinpoint where they settle for the night, it’s going to be tight.
