The girls loved the games; they were not invested in playing them much, but they enjoyed being spectators. I had been tempted a couple of times to play, especially when Demetri was happy to push me, but after winning a beer, I found I preferred to be beside Cora, enjoying her smile and laughter, than to be out there playing.

We came across a drinking game, and I did a hard pass. I had no intention of getting drunk so soon in the day, and the others agreed, who needed to get drunk and not remember the rest of the night. We continued to walk around, greeting fellow riders, chatting about the games, and avoiding any negative conversations. It was good to catch up and introduce Cora and Demetri to several other club members. Many were glad to see Scones out on runs again; she had been sadly missed, and a few congratulated her for coming out and about again. That made Scones beam with delight at so many well wishes. This outing was great for Scones, bringing her back into circulation, as it were, so many missed her; she was one of the favourite ladies, among the other women, always having a kind word and a friendly ear.

We moved back to camp, where dinner was being cooked. Cora and Scones got stuck right in and started helping with the cooking, where Demetri and I sat back and watched them together, talking, laughing, and Scones ensuring Cora was participating in the conversations and laughter. It was good to see her laughing so much, and, being part of the team, Cora has voiced her worries about the other ladies of the club and their acceptance. I tried to assure her that she was part of the club, and the ladies had accepted her, but

what Scones was doing, as she included Cora, did more than any of reassurances.

The ladies are enjoying themselves, with Scones in the kitchen all the time back at the clubhouse. I am surprised she was so eager to join in and cook here, thought she would like a break.Demetri voiced his thoughts. One of his men arrived with two coffees and handed me one. I hadn’t even seen him ask his

man to get one.

Hand signals?I asked, without having to explain.

Yes.Demetri didn’t hesitate to answer. I had seen his men talking with their hands, and thought as much.

Can you teach me?

Sure. Not here, back home, I can work with you, and maybe Cora would like to learn too, so that you can talk to each other across the room.

I like the sound of that. What about Scones?

Will ask, but so far she doesn’t seem to be interested in what she calls men’s business. I have a feeling her first husband did a number on her, and she is still very cautious about what she gets involved in. Scars of the past are harder to get past.Demetri said, and I understood that, because some things Cora was still closed off from.

Food’s ready,Scones called out, and the men crowded around the table. It smelt good.

There was sliced beef, steaks, chops, sausages, satay sticks, chicken wings, and then an assortment of vegetables and salads, potato salad, coleslaw, a rice salad, not my cup of tea, but some like it, potatoes in their jacket, that had been wrapped in foil, and thrown in the fire. I love that kind of baked spud, corn on the cob, also been in the fire, and other foods, I don’t recognise. The ladies know how to spoil us men folk.

Scones and Cora look like they are getting along well, good for both of us,” I stated as we watched the Two of them at the food table.

Yes, I am glad that Cora wasn’t upset over me not giving her the time we had planned, and making the suggestion that we go over things at home as a family, all four of us together, it will be good for you and Scones to get some more background on her past, and the pain her mother had suffered, might help underestand those odd looks you get occasionally, especially when another woman was sniffing around.I agree, I do get some pained looks. I don’t know if they are from memories of her past, from trust issues, or from thinking I would betray her. I had thought we were beyond that, and I hope we are, because I haven’t seen that look recently.

Scones and Cora came to us; both had huge smiles on their faces and carried plates already filled for us, and one for themselves, sat beside us, and dug in. The food was as good as it looked and smelt, the conversations ceased briefly, and they filled their faces, and then slowly grew again.

The girls didn’t want to see the evening games; they wanted to dance, and reluctantly, Demetri and I joined them. I was not a heavy rock dancer; I just bobbed up and down to the beat, along with Cora. It was not until a slower rock and roll song came on that I grabbed Cora, and started to do something a bit more than bob about, I swung Cora away, holding her hand, and pulling her back to me, picked her up and swing in a circle, there wasn’t a lot of space to dance like I wanted to, but we managed in what we had. Cora laughed, and her cheeks grew redder as I spun, twisted, and threw her about as if she weighed nothing at all. I was getting hot and sweaty from the exertion, but seeing her eyes sparkle and the joy in her face made getting a bit sweaty worthwhile.

Enough, I need a drink,Cora said as we finished the dance. I bowed to her, and took her hand to walk her away from the dancing area, a round of applause from the crowd as we turned to leave surprised me, they had moved asside to watch us dance, and appreciated what we had done, Cora had followed my lead, like we had done this before numerous times, not being our first time on the dance floor dancing like this. Cora giggled and bowed to the crowd, a smile still beaming across her red face.

At the table, I grabbed two bottles of water and returned to Cora, who was watching the band on the stage. They weren’t bad. Tonight was a freeforall, meaning the music equipment was on stage, and you could go up and sing. If you couldn’t play an instrument, there are men and ladies close to the stage who will play the song for you, and you can sing, it;s been a long time since I ever got drunk enough to go on stage and sing, and that was my worst night, because the woman that convinced me to join her on stage, not only couldn’t sing a note, but cheated on my that night, I found her in another bikers bedroli the next morning, and told her she had to find her own way home. I wasn’t carrying that cheating woman on my bike again. I don’t know who brought her back to the clubhouse. I see her around from time to time, but don’t give her a second thought. We’ve only been together a few weeks, so my heart wasn’t broken, just another level of armour over my heart.

Scones and Demetri, soon found us, having left the dance floor for drinks too. Scones tried to convince Demetri to go on stage with her and sing a song.

I

Gunner come on, up to the stage and sing with me, I know you can sing.Scones asked me, after failing to get Demetri to go up there with her.

Go, I want to hear you sing, I want to see if it compares to your shower voice.I chuckled. Cora had me singing in the shower a few times. Cora managed to convince me to go on stage and sing, which wasn’t my favourite activity. I don’t mind singing at home around the campfire, joining in with the crowd, but going out on stage to sing was a whole different thing. It’s nerveracking up there on stage, all those people staring at you; they can be brutal when you can’t sing.

But with Cura’s help, Scones managed to get me to move to the staging area and wait for our turn.

What do you want to sing?Scones came up with a few suggestions. I didn’t know all the words to a couple, and we ended up, with one. I at least knew the words to the whole song, and not just the chorus.

We were up next. I moved to the stage, picked up the guitar, strummed a few notes to check it was in tune, and started the introduction chord I stayed focused on the guitar and avoided looking at the crowd.
