Chapter 134

Cora POV

The place was a mess, and helped with picking up the rubbish. The floodlights came on, making it easier to see. So much glass was scattered about; to me, it had to have been brought in. Some of this was not from our bottles or glasses; a few had a motive on them, which I carefully picked up, wrapped in some paper, and put in my pocket. I think Oddball should look at this; the whole carpark will need to be cleared of all this glass.

Hadn’t been out here for long before Gunner came out, looking for me.

“Hacker needs your help.” I didn’t ask why. If Hacker needs me, I can already guess. We turned and walked inside. The inside was clean, with no sign that they had come inside. That was a relief.

Hacker asked me to research the names of the four they had identified, get the usual.

I started with the easy part, the license department, and found drivers’ licenses. Vehicles they owned, any infringements, then onto the bank details, and lastly the police records, I left them for last, as getting into the police department records can be tricky. Still, I had luck; these idiots were well known by the police for doing exactly what they did here, disruption and property damage, nothing serious against them, but it did reveal other known accomplices and forwarded it to Hacker.

“Thanks, can you look into the house, and deeper into their lives?”

I returned to the computer and started deeper searches, unsure what to expect. For each new piece of information found, I took a screenshot and added it to the spreadsheet. Time stood still as I immersed myself in the hunt.

Gunner touched my shoulder.

“Yes?”

“Food, and bed, it’s late, save what you have done.” I looked around, and no one else was in the room.

“They are in the dining hall, come on, you’re the last one working.” Gunner urged me to stop. I had no idea I had been in front of this computer for so long.

The food was hot and nutritious, but when I am in working mode, the taste is almost non-existent. I am sure it was tasty.

The men talked about the mess.

What they thought was happening was that we were targeted, but no one could say by whom.

Why could it be just because we are a bike club?

Then it could be a vendetta against one of us, and that had me thinking of my uncle: would he be prepared to do something like this?

My blood ran cold as I thought about that for a moment.

‘Yes.’ Rang the clear reply in my head, my uncle would stoop this low.

“Dad, are you still investigating Uncle?”

The conversation around the table suddenly stopped, and all turned to look between Demetri and me.

Dad pulled out his phone and made a call; his men looked uncomfortable, while Oddball, Gunner, Strike and Scones all stared at me, like I had grown a second head all of a sudden.

“What?” I asked, looking from one to another. Did knowing my uncie could be involved cause an issue?

“That’s the first time we have heard you call Demetri ‘Dad,” Scones answered with a smile.

‘Demetri is my dad, what’s the problem?”

“No problem, you call him Demetri, and hearing you call him Dad was a little surprise, we know he’s your dad, but we never thought much of it, until you called him that.” Strike was the one looking most shocked.

“When did you start to acknowledge him as your dad?” Gunner took my hand and squeezed it.

“Yesterday, thought it was time to give him his rightful name, but it doesn’t mean he is out of the woods yet; he still has to earn my trust, as a father that is. He could bail on me again.” There I voiced it, it’s out for all to see, my biggest fear, to get to love and trust him as my dad, and he bails on me, running away like what I thought his did to my mother.

“He was young and stupid, easily influenced by his parents. Still at school, he was forced to give her up.” One of Dad’s men said with a little heat.

“Yeah, we have known him since school days. You have no idea the pressure he was under at the time. No way will he bail on you. He has been wanting to meet you since before you were born. It devastated him to give up the love of his life. He won’t make that mistake again. He’s stronger now, and away from the family, he hasn’t spoken or seen his parents since his grandfather died.” Dad’s men, well, some of them, who had been around him all their lives, had his back; you could see how much they supported him, and it was good to find out that they were schoolmates, chums since the cradle.

“Cora, the investigators say your uncle does have a contract out on you. They will investigate if he had any connection to this disruption of the club. It could be a warning not to support you; they have people following him all the time, and a Hacker watching his phone and internet, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t contact someone. Using work phones or computers is not monitored, and there are too many of them. We will have to include him on the list of suspects.” Dad either didn’t hear the conversation at the table or chose not to say anything, maybe waiting till we were alone and trying to convince me lagain that he had changed and wasn’t going anywhere.

“That man is not beyond doing things he shouldn’t. I am surprised he was not in jail, though the police arrested him for drugs or something. What about his wife? Are you monitoring her phones?” I couldn’t remember what it was; I didn’t really want to remember, and by now, he would have buried his son.

“Will get onto that now, we were focused on him, but he could have used her phone.”

“Don’t underestimate that woman, she was part of the conspiracy, to milk my mother dry, from day one, they are as evil as each other. I was fed lie after lie, and their history is all muddied up. I could put money on hirn as being the one to organise Mother’s death, and she would have been the one to hand him the loaded gun. With the loss of their only child, they both would want blood.” I spat out that they would be the nastiest people I know.

“Jake had been moved, Sally-Anne’s body had been taken, at the same time as Jake moved away. They Thave no reason to be here in town.” Strike added, I didn’t ask how she knew, most likely a conversation

with Bluey, she would know all movement in that hospital.

“I am sorry if my coming here has brought all this trouble to your dook” I apologised to Oddball and the table in general.

“Not your fault, you couldn’t have known all this was going to happen, moving here was to get away from an unfortunate situation, you couldn’t have known they’d follow.” Scortes put her hand on mine; it was warm and soft, just like her.

I nodded in response, too lost for words. My uncle, will he ever truly be out of ray life?

The table talked a bit longer, the pros and cons and the names on the spreadsheet, which had been growing, before I was dragged away from my investigation.

“Sleep, we can continue this tomorrow, those of us who don’t have a job to go to,” Oddball called it a night, pushing us out the door, so to speak. None went home; all headed to beds in the clubhouse.

We didn’t go home either; Gunner led me upstairs to his old room, and we bedded down for the night. I was too upset for romance. He tried to talk to me, but I wasn’t in the mood. He held me close, his hand drawing circles on my tummy and kissing my hair, trying to soothe me. He was doing a good job of it.

“You can’t take responsibility for other people’s actions. You didn’t do anything to cause this. It’s all on your uncle and aunt; they are hurting and want someone to hurt too, and you have always been the one they turned to, to inflict pain, to relieve them of theirs.”

I knew this, but hearing Gunner say it helped a little. That man has a long reach, and I have nowhere to hide.

“Dad said he was going to up my security detail, at least until we rid ourselves of that man, and I feel I will only be safe when my uncle and aunt are both dead. I don’t mean I wanted them dead, just that I would never feel safe.” I meant it, I don’t want him dead, just out of my life.
