Chapter 136

My men were outside helping with the clean up, some inside chatting casually with those inside, one helping in the kitchen to hear what’s going on in there, he was a cook in the services, so knows his way around the kitchen, and how to collect gossip, if the ladies have information, he will dig it out of them. They might not even know they gave out the info.
My men are good, inside or out; they will get information that wouldn’t be discussed in meetings, because out there, they don’t feel like they are under the microscope, and every word is being dissected and hunted for hidden meanings.
Tomorrow we will meet up and discuss what they found out. Some are going to sleep in rooms with other members, since no one is going home; that might be interesting. Finding places for my men to sleep, Strike was working on it, being the one to allocate rooms; however, I think most of my men will pull out their sleeping bags and sleep out in the yard. They have roughed it many times before, and camping another night won’t hurt them. Some prefer the great outdoors, sleeping under the stars. But the main reason for finding shared rooms was to see whether the members would talk in the privacy of the bedroom.
I showered and crawled into bed, behind Scones.
“Today has been a mixture of ups and downs. I am drained, physically and emotionally.” Scones admitted to the darkness, as I spooned in behind her.
“Agreed, what an end to a perfect weekend.” I didn’t want to talk about it; my mind was already working on those text messages I received from my investigator/
“You were great, joining in, as if you had been part of the club for years, not a visiting member. All your men were well-behaved and mingled; it was good to see. I even heard that two of you men calmed a drunken situation before it came to blows, you must be proud of them.” Scones continued, and I had to put what I was thinking about to the back of my mind, to sort out later, because it appears my woman needs to unload and defrag, and I was okay with that. In a way, it was good to push thoughts away because at some point you have to turn work off and have some personal time, something I haven’t had much of over the years, and it will take a bit of time to change my habits, which I had built up over years of, in a way, hiding from emotions.
୮
“They have been with me for many years, only a few are new, as in eight years ago, joining the team, they know my habits, my thoughts, and we ge!, never having to fight, some are married, and the wife, would be close by, we are working on bringing them to Cora’s place, when we can build a little mini village, Coral wants about ten portable homes brought in, to be placed on the other side of the helipad, where they will live, those with wives can have them join us there, but that’s still under development, need to do the groundwork first, you know power, water, sewer, then bring the transportables in. Her plan looks lovely, and the men will love it.” I was waffling on and realised I hadn’t actually answered her question.
“You have more than twenty men, though, don’t you?” Scone’s voice is starting to sound sleepy.
“Yes, I own a security company that stretches worldwide, you name it, my men have been bodyguards to them at some point, they do a lot of undercover work for the military and government, sort of places where they can’t go, legally. I have over two thousand men and women working in that company around

the world, branches in almost every country and the majority of employees are either ex-military or forces, Tike police, firefighters, paramedics, search and rescue, who often had some injury or reason to be no Tonger in active duty, but need somewhere to work, we can use their skills and experience, in a lot of
different situations. Please work out their skills and preferences and find them a place. It’s good when we find their niche; happy workers make good workers.”
Scones hummed; sleep almost claimed her.
It had been a long day.
For both of us.
Contentment filled me, as the warmth of sleeping Scones warmed me, and her slow, deep breathing lulled me to sleep as no medication or drink could.
That was the position I found myself in when I woke in the morning, Scones still asleep, in my arms, neither of us having moved. As much as I wanted to stay in that position for a while longer, I knew I had work to do, and lying here wouldn’t get it done.
Pulled myself carefully from behind Scones, leaving her to sleep, used the bathroom, and a quick shower, threw on my jeans and shirt, boots, and opened the door, looked on last time at Scones, sleeping form, and headed downstairs for coffee, food, and hunt for Oddball, and my men at some point, maybe hunt my men down first, so I can give Oddball an update.
The kitchen was quiet; no one had started any breakfast. It wasn’t that early, yet without Scones around, the kitchen had got slack. I made a pot of coffee and some toast. With coffee and toast in hand, I headed outside to look around. Eating my toast as I went.
Knuckles was out here with Blockhead.
“What’s new?” I asked, as I ate the last of my coffee
They gave me what they had found, and gossip, although some sounded far-fetched, but nothing was left out; we needed to hear it all, even the impossible gossip.
“Nothing left out here to look at, I did find this though.” Knuckles handed me a wallet and explained where it was found.
I opened it and recognised it was one of the men in the footage, but not one of the four we were going to round up. I searched through the wallet, found some cards and other information, took photos of them, and forwarded them to my investigative team.
“Coffee’s hot, brewed it myself, go get yourself one and something to eat, don’t know if anyone in there yet, but plenty of food in the kitchen.” I moved around the car park and walked down to the gate. It was closed, but the locks were damaged. I didn’t see anything unexpected, and moved back inside to put my cup back
in the kitchen,
The kitchen was busy, with my men making food for themselves, but still no sign of the ladies. Oddball came in and stopped at the door.
“No ladies?” Oddball asked, I thought it was obvious, but then they may have come in, started, and left to set up the dining hall.
Nope, not yet, want something? Hatchet asked being our cook
“Coffee, bacon sandwich Oddball answered, walking further into the kitchen
Coffee pot hot andready bacon sandwiches on the table, help yourself’ Hatchet replied as he put more bacon in the pan. The courts of the bacon hitting the hot pan caused it to sizzle and pop
Oddball took two bacon sandwiches and a mug of coffee
My office” He said as he turned towards the door
I refilled my coffee cup and followed Oddball to his office
“Close the door”
“President to president, what are your thoughts?” Oddball asked ag I took a seat, not at his desk but at the lounge chair, two equals seated together.
“Before we talk, I need you to see this. One of my men found it in the bushes.” I fished out the wallet and handed it to him.
Oddball removed the license, inspected it, placed it on the table in front of us, then started pulling out each card, looking at the front and back, placing them on the table, and removing money, notes, and coins Soon the table was full of assorted information, some I recognised, some I didn’t.
*The gun club again. We need to dig deeper.” Oddball said. So I gave him a rundown of what I had discovered about the gun club and mentioned that Cora had a large spreadsheet of names that
overlapped with the gun club.
“You might not be surprised that she found her uncle’s name and Jake’s in that list. He’s a dangerous man, and under investigation by the fraud squad, he also had been served over the weekend on behalf of the fund stolen from Cora, and we believe he had hired the gunman who shot Cora’s mother. We are still gathering evidence on that.”
“You think this is all linked?”
“Not positive, no, we have the gun club links, his association with the gunman that shot Dianne, and we have other evidence, but still not enough to lay charges on him, serving him with the notice of intent, for the stolen money, or miss use of the money for personal gain, might distract him enough for us to find the rest of the evidence. I have my men looking at links. The shooters so far are all gun club members, but we have yet to prove it was an order from the gue club”
