Chapter 152
Chapter 152
Gunner POV
Oddball and Strike were at the breakfast table.
“The new Guards seem nice,” Strike said casually, as she picked at her food.
They met them last night briefly, before going to the clubhouse. Oddbali had tried to get me to co but understood when I requested to stay and get to know the new guards.
The clubhouse meeting was the final check and instructions for our members going in to hunt the shooters. Demetri’s men had left hours ago and would be almost there, whereas ours won’t be lea until early morning and will arrive just hours before the van. It was agreed that our members stay i view, having a meal and chatting, fuel up bikes, that sort of thing, the average traveller would do. T were a distraction; maybe the shooter had his eyes on them, rather than what was hidden in the tre watching him. No one will move in till Demetri’s men say rifle sighted.
The other club’s members will arrive around the same time as the van, and join our members and c looking more and more like a place to catch up, and not watching them; they don’t even have to loo him. Plenty of unseen eyes will be doing that.
“They are, so far, but then they are paid to be nice,” Oddball replied with an edge to his voice.
“No, they are not paid to be nice; they are paid to do a job. What’s got in your undies, worried about th members?” Ruby looked at Oddball, her eyes searching his face.
“Stress, our guys are out there risking their lives, and we are socialising.” Oddball spat back; somethin else was annoying him.
Breakfast was more or less done, so it didn’t surprise me when Demetri barked.
“My office now.” I got up, as did Oddball, and Cora, Strike, and Ruby stayed staring at us; Ruby was unsu if she should come, and something made her stay with Strike. Strike didn’t even blink when Demetri ordered Oddball to his office.
Demetri didn’t sit behind his desk; he leaned back on it, his arms folded as he stared at Oddball, assess
him.

“Talk.” Demetri eventually barked, once the room became uncomfortable
Cora was seated on a chair; I was beside her, and Oddball stood in front of Demetri, looking every bit the scolded son rather than the president of our club.
“It feels wrong somehow; I can’t put my finger on it, but my guy says someone is informing them, and ca work out who.”
“Who knows of today?” Demetri asked, and at that question, my mind ran over who was in the room when he was discussing it. All I would have trusted. But my guts say I am going to be shocked when i find out who.
“Just our men that I have sent out, maybe some officers,” Oddball said as he too tried to think about who was in the room. I don’t think we were thinking spy at the time, we trusted our men

“Did you open the report my man sent you regarding the gun?” Demetri was still leaning on the de Tooking casual, but something tells me he was not as relaxed as he was portraying.
“Not yet,” Oddball admitted.
“Then it’s time you did. Let me give you a rundown: the gun was stolen from the police, the vehicle transporting guns and other evidence to a holding facility had an accident, and the contents were from the compound the vehicle had been towed to, but that part is unclear, as the report about tha was conflicting.”
“The gun was used in a killing or holdup?” I threw it out there; it made sense.
“Yes, and without the gun, the case was thrown out, but somehow it has surfaced again and ended our yard.”
“Who? You know who did this?” Oddball asked, scratching his head.
“Some of it, we found fingerprints on the bullets: one partial, could be yours, and the second one, yo not going to believe me.”
“It’s been years since I touched bullets, oh, unless they were the unspent ones from the first shooter’s and bullets, I had picked one up and examined it.”
“That could be it,” Oddball answered, as the tension in the room seemed to reduce as we talked.
“The second bullet, you got a match?” I asked, sensing more was coming.
“Bluey?” Cora chimed in with her opinion.
“What? No! No way would Bluey be a traitor; she’s been with us for four years. Since she and Scrubs go together, they worked with each other for a year before they hooked up. We trust her. You are just hurt because she was behind you getting terminated.” Oddball denied Cora’s suggestion, Cora bristled at th suggestion, and was about to say something when Demetri put up his hand to stop her from venting.
“How did you come up with her name as a suspect?” Demetri asked, smiling at her. Cora has a great problem-solving mind, which I admire about her.
“When I came with Gunner for breakfast that first time, she came in all loud and bright smiles, and she w shocked to see Gunner up and around, it was more than him being able to walk around, it was like she thought he should be dead, or close to it, and the look I got when she was told save you, by jumping in front of Gunner, it did not say she was pleased to hear that news, it was fleeting, and being new there, an full of my own troubles and pain, didn’t put it together. She often asked the wrong questions, and then sh changed me to night shift for a made-up excuse; the nurses talked, Bluey had been taking stuff, bandages and other medical stuff, but it wasn’t coming to the clubhouse. Someone had been in my office a few times because things were inoved; I’m not sure what they were looking for, and Bluey was the only one- knew had easy access to my office. I had seen her with bullets in her hand, wrapping them up, and tucking them in her pocket. She didn’t see me, but I was out in the work shed, after giving Gunner some coffee and had been sitting watching him for too long, and needed to stretch my legs.”
“Why didn’t you say something?” Oddball asked, still not believing Cora.
“What would I say? All was my word. A new person to the club against an established member who you believe first?” Cora defended. She was right, none of us would have thought badly of Blues

would have looked into it.”
Demetri put up his hand again to stop Oddball from saying more.
stan
“Cora did right, under the circumstances. You would believe Bluey over Cora, plus you would have tipp Bluey off and put Cora’s life in danger. If she were trying to take Gunner out, she wouldn’t hesitate to pu hit on Cora.”
“What? Are you saying the other bullet has Bluey’s fingerprints on it?” Oddball jumped in, stopping Dem from finishing his sentence.
“Exactly. That woman has links to the black market and other underground dealings.”
“Black market?” Oddball whispered. You could see he was having difficulty believing what he was heari
“Poor Scrubs, he loves that woman, and all she was doing was using him for her own gain. Is she linked the shootings?” Cora looked a little sad; she had a soft spot for those being betrayed, trust broken.
“I don’t think Scrubs would be involved; they have had a few arguments lately, and things between them have been breaking down. Bluey was trying to blame you for all their marital problems, but all of us cou see you were too fixated with me to be looking at Scrubs that way.” I added when Oddball didn’t answer her question.
“I never saw Scrubs as anything more than a club and work colleague; he’s a good man.”
“What now? Do you know Bluey’s contacts? Who she’s mainly dealing with?”
“No, it took a little longer to put Bluey to the name on the registry. I didn’t know Bluey’s birth name till las night, when my man called with the match.” Demetri stared at Oddball, waiting for something to click, or possibly waiting for him to make up his mind. He believed what he was hearing; it’s not easy to accept th one of your own, who often had your life in their hands, was a traitor.
“Gunner, have you had a run-in with Bluey? For her to target you?” Cora asked suddenly.
“Not that I can place, give time to think, and see what I can think of.”
“Dad, if Bluey has links to the black market, does that mean she has links to my uncle? Didn’t you say the police were investigating him for that, on top of my claim?”
