Come on, Oddball, think. I thought to myself as he refused to put two and two together; his belief in Bluey’s loyalty was ingrained.

It took Cora to speak to get Oddball to where he needed to be, and now I am waiting to see what kind of president he is. He was in denial about Bluey; even with the facts staring him in the face, he still doesn’t want to believe that Bluey was stabbing them in the back, stealing from the hospital, and taking urgently needed supplies to sell on the black market.

“Oddball, why don’t you want to believe it was Bluey all this time, betraying our club members? Maybe Dormouse caught her, and she had to get rid of him before he said anything. It all fits, once you start to put the pieces together.” Gunner said he was sold on the

evidence, even if Oddball doesn’t want to believe it.

“How does all this fit with the shootings?” Oddball asked, as he turned to look at Cora, trying to figure out what? The report on the fingerprints, Cora wouldn’t have tampered with, but Cora did find the gun; would that be enough to suspect Cora was up to something?

“You don’t like Bluey, so you concocted this up.” Oddball eventually said.

“If you believe that, go pack your bags and get out of my home.” Cora spat back, standing up and glaring at Oddball, with hurt in her eyes, her cheeks flushed. Oddball was an angry man who was going to do something stupid.

“Fine, I’ll go pack now.” Oddball stormed out of the room, slamming the door on his way out.

“He’s going to talk to Bluey, and Bluey will think she will have a chance to hide all the evidence and fabricate a story,” Cora said softly as she stared at the door Oddball just slammed shut.

“Yes, and when he eventually believes, he will be devastated, feel guilty and then embarrassed. What do you want to do?” I asked, knowing this was not going to end well.

“Leave this town. I have finished sending the council my suggestions for the park; it’s in for voting and approval. If it fails, there’s nothing else I can do. There’s nothing else to tie me to this town except Gunner; I have yet to receive an answer to the question I gave him. But this situation has changed everything, I want nothing to do with the club, with Oddball storming out, like he just did, I will never trust him, he’s not behaving like a president of a club, that I know of, but a man hurt and in denial, nothing I can do to change his view, he has to run that gauntlet on his own, and accept his error eventually. I have an offer on the table for this place, almost double what I paid for it; they have been sending me emails, trying to negotiate

the purchase. They put their offer to Cummins too late, and now they are chasing me. I have spoken to Mr Cummins, and he was delighted with the news. If I am really going to move on already, then he was the perfect man for the house; they know each other, and he had felt bad that he had sold it to me before the offer came in; it was too late.”

“What do you want to do?” I asked, pulling Cora back to the chair and pushing gently to get her to sit.

“Um, I think babies are on the cards. Nothing planned yet, but I think I would like to be a mother and give my child all the love that I missed out on from both parents. I was waiting for Gunner to tell me what he wanted to do before discussing it.” I looked at Gunner’s shocked face. I didn’t know what Cora had asked Gunner.

“Gunner?” He turned to look at me before shrugging.

“With this morning’s development, it made it easier; yes, I would be happy to move away from here. With Oddball pushing you away, he has pushed me away too. Demetri, I accept the offer to join your club. Can you sort the transfers out?”

“What about your business?” Cora asked Gunner before I could.

“Had one of my staff members approach me; he wanted to know if he could buy it, or become a partner in it, as his brother was now a mechanic too, and they want to branch out on their own, but buying mine, one already established, would be a better start for them. I have been thinking about it, but now I am going to talk to him about him and his brother buying it; he might offer a deal where they can pay me in instalments rather than getting a

next. I don’t think I want to go back to nursing; this town has made me think about why I took it up in the first place, and it wasn’t because I loved the profession.” Cora didn’t go into any details, but I got the message loud and clear.

Cora and Gunner left my office, and I was glad I hadn’t brought much here, just the basic essentials. I opened my computer and started the club transfer paperwork. Oddball won’t need to give permission; this was just a courtesy. Dot the I’s and cross the T’s; it makes it more official and clean. When it came to the reason for the transfer, I wanted to put the truth, but in the end, I put family reasons. It was cleaner and easier, as family came first, then club, in my books; too bad if Oddball doesn’t agree. My finger hovered over the send button.

I phoned Gunner.

“Gunner?”

“About to send the transfer papers, last chance to back out,” I said with no preamble.

“Send it.” He replied calmly. Shop noise in the background, and a bike started up.

I pushed the button.

“Gone, no turning back now,” I informed him.

“Good, I have the lad here in my office, waiting for his brother to arrive.”

“Good luck.” At least having someone who has worked there for years knows the ropes, and the club can’t take advantage of him.

A knock on the door had me walking over to open it; being soundproof, calling out “Enter” wouldn’t be heard, and I had done that more than once over the years, at home, in my soundproof office.

Cora was waiting on the other side, with coffee in hand.

“Done. We agreed on a price, and the transfer will happen in a week, so you have a week to get out of here. He will continue with the agreement I have with the staff. Will inform them later today, when we are all home. Clara has informed me that Oddball and Strike have left; a van arrived, and they moved their things out and are gone. Which is a relief because I didn’t want to face him again, yet.” This town has been a bad experience for Cora; the only good thing was Gunner. Maybe this was always meant to be.
