Gunner POV
Oddball has lost the plot; maybe all this shooter business and members being hurt has got to him, and with Strike pregnant, his protection for her must be through the roof. It’s good that Cora sent him packing; I don’t want to face him till I have a chance to calm down, or I might say something he won’t like.
Oddball put me in a situation where I had to choose between the club I had loved all my life and my future wife, as that’s how I think of Cora; I just haven’t asked her yet, but it’s close, very close. So of course I chose my future, not my past, and when I made up my mind to sell my bike shop, which I built from scratch, I felt relief and freedom. If the new owners don’t want to deal with the club, they don’t have to; we get enough business through the door not to need the club members who always want credit and leave me chasing them for the funds. At the moment, I have no outstanding monies owed by the club members; now is a good time to sell up.
“Gunner, this is my brother Tommy.”
“Welcome, Tommy.” I made sure the door was closed and started talking. I had the paperwork all drawn up for the sale; we just needed to work out a price. To my surprise, the lads had money; they were willing to pay half the money and send the rest in instalments. We signed on the dotted line, and I congratulated the lads and wished them good luck.
Together we went to the bank, and I moved all my money away from that account and into my personal one. The boys signed at the bank; it would take two weeks for the settlement. As it was more than the business, it was the building too, and that was the part that would take a bit longer to settle, and the transfer of the business name they were going to change the name as so they should, they need to claim it totally, it’s theirs now to do as they wish, they didn’t even need me to return to the shop, once I had cleared out personal gear. One of the lads has a business degree; they did it online while becoming a mechanic. They had always intended to have a business of their own. It was good to see that the young ones can have goals and were ready to reach out and claim them. Then, I was glad they came to me first, before starting one on their own. Starting up can take forever to start getting a profit, at least there are some good customers, like the local bike sales shop, that often sends business here- trade-ins they want checked out and minor repairs done.
We went back to the shop, and I packed up my few things into my saddle bags, and then went through the computer system, payroll passwords and basic information. If they need advice, they have my number, and I would help where I could.
The boys didn’t want to announce they had purchased the business for now. The new lad

wanted to see how the other staff treated them, as one of the shop floor, before announcing they were the boss. I think they were looking at who to sack; the only person who would know was the assistant manager.
“Gunner, what’s up?” The assistant manager asked as he walked in and made himself comfortable on the lounge.
“These two lads are now the owners of the business. Keep it to yourself, as they want to observe the staff before making any announcements.”
“Since when?”
“Since this morning.” They talked business first: what their goals were, what would happen to some of the staff, and the small changes to the club members- no more credit; they need to pay before they get their bikes back.
“The club’s not going to like that change.” He grumbled, knowing his job just got harder.
“I know, but no one cared about my bills, or if I could go without months of payment. I have had enough.”
“What’s really going on?” I looked at the lads and back to him, and shrugged.
“You keep this under your hat for now; give the lads a chance to settle in. Any whisper and I know it’s from you.” He nodded.
“Welcome aboard. Are you changing the name?”
“Yes, it will take a few weeks to get the painters and signwriters in, that’s when we will announce the change of ownership.”
I shook the lad’s hands, wished them luck, and headed to my bike. I took one last lingering look, lifted my leg over the bike, inserted the key, and the assistant manager came rushing
over to me.
“What’s going on? Really.” He pushed, like I knew he would.
“The lads came to me and asked if I wanted to sell. I had been thinking about it, and then today, an altercation with Oddball- he was moving back to the clubhouse- and that aided my decision. The lads and I came to an agreement, and signed it over to them today.”
“How bad a disagreement.” I shrugged off my cut and threw it at him; he caught it before it
hit the floor.
“Next time you are in the clubhouse, give this to Oddball.

The look of horror on his face was telling; no one would ever believe something could ever be that bad, that I surrendered my cut.
“You don’t mean that.” He tried to give me the cut back.
“Good luck, and I am no longer Gunner.” I started my bike and rode away, leaving him staring at my back. I watched him in my mirror till he was out of sight, hugging my cut, like it was something precious. Once upon a time, it meant everything to me. But Oddball lost my trust today, and I don’t know if I could ever have it again.
I pulled up at home and looked around.
We hadn’t been here that long, but it felt too long already.
It was time to move on, time for me to see how the city folk do it.
I was ready for something new.
Collected my paperwork and personal items from the saddlebags and headed inside, taking the items to my room and placing them on the table. My life was on the table; not much to look at. But my bank balance was healthy; I could survive for a while, and with the payment plan for the rest, I took my time finding what I wanted to do next.
“Good, I should be out of here in two days. You can move in anytime; you have the codes, and the spare keys I will leave in the safe in this office. The work outside will be completed in two weeks. I will leave you to settle up on that, and they are open to any additional work.” Cora listened for a while and then said goodbye.
“You look rough, you want to talk about it?” Cora asked, that’s my girl- sensitive, caring.
“Business is sold, and I am now unemployed.” She looked at me before adding.
“And?”
“Am I that transparent?” I asked, wondering what she could see.
“To me, maybe you look like more than the sale of your business has happened.” Yep, can’t hide anything from Cora.
“I handed in my cut, I am no longer Gunner.”
“Who are you then?”
“Like Ruby, I will revert back to my birth name until your father gives me a new road name.”
“Which is?”

“Xavier.” I watched her mime my name, and her eyes brightened.

“Suits you.” Cora moved from behind her desk and wrapped her arms around my waist, resting her head on my chest. I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her head.
This was home, here in her arms. A thought hit me: with all this negative emotion, I need a positive, and if the answer was no, then I would have to rethink my next move. I dug into my pocket, moved her hands from around me, and dropped to one knee.
“Cora, you came to my rescue in more ways than one. Will you be my one and only, my best friend, my confidant, my lover, my pillion, my wife? I want to start a fresh life, and I want to do it with you.” I held my breath as I held out the ring and waited with hope in my heart. I hadn’t planned on asking her this way; I brought the ring a few days ago, saw it in an antique shop, and thought it suited her. We can get it resized if it doesn’t fit.
