Chapter 155

Cora POV

Xavier, I rolled that name over in my head. I liked it more than Gunner. I wonder what new name Father will give him? The name on Dad’s cut below his title ‘Prez’ was Coins; I guess that related to him being rich. I noticed not all of Dad’s men’s road names were bike- or road-related; just like Dad being Coins, one guy was called Smartass, another Lost-it. Some were funny, and I liked that they didn’t fit the norm; I have always liked things that were different.

What I hadn’t expected was for Xavier to drop to one knee, holding out the most gorgeous ring I have ever seen; it wasn’t huge and extravagant, it was four coloured stones, in a silver ring, and it had a look like a vine, the stones being the buds on the vine; it was intricate and feminine. I loved it.

Xavier was staring up at me, with hope in his eyes, almost pleading for me to say yes.

“Are you sure?” I asked softly, taking the ring from the box and trying it on for size. It fit perfectly and didn’t look bulky on my hand.

“Yes, I had wanted a more romantic setting, but when I gave up my cut and found myself with loose ends, all I could think of was being with you, and hence me asking now: will you be mine, be by my side, as equals? I am no longer the enforcer, I am just a man wanting you to be my wife.”

“Yes,” I whispered back, and gained a bruising kiss, then, holding on to my waist, twirled me around in a circle.

“She said yes!!!!” He shouted out. I giggled as he held me tight, lowering me again, and giving me another kiss.

“We are both unemployed and now homeless.” I smiled; he kissed me on my nose and smiled. Something twinkled in his eyes.

“Let’s find Demetri and give him the good news.” I nodded as he slipped his arm around my waist and opened the door, leaving my office on the hunt for Dad.

We found him in the sitting room, talking to Ruby.

“Dad.” He looked up, and I raised my hand, twisting it to show off my ring.

Dad was on his feet in a flash. He came and grabbed my hand, looking closer at the ring, then did what Xavier did: picked me up, turned in a circle, placed me back on my feet and turned to

Xavier.

“Gunner.” Dad started, his face looking serious.

“No, Dad,” I jumped in, correcting Dad.

“He handed in his cut; he’s gone back to his birth name. It’s Xavier now.” Dad looked at Xavier for a long moment, causing me to worry, before he nodded, having come to some conclusion.

“Xavier, you better look after my girl here; she means the world to me, and handing in your cut, does this also mean you would like to join my club?” Dad sounded every bit the Prez of his club, his voice laced with authority, as he questioned Xavier, and I don’t think it would be wise to stop the interrogation that was going on.

“That depends on Cora; if she wants to be part of a bike club, or just be my wife,” Xavier answered, as Ruby had hold of my hand, inspecting the ring, running her finger over the vines, whispering beautiful under her breath, but I heard it, and had to agree it was.

“Cora?” I was still watching Ruby as she smiled at me and ran a hand over my cheek.

“Cora?” I heard Dad call out again, and turned to look at him, having not paid much attention to Dad’s conversation, but listening to Ruby.

“What?” I barked out. Louder than I had intended.

“Are you joining my club?” Dad asked, with a smile.

“Why not? I have enjoyed being on the back of Xavier, and that weekend trip, when we had a lot of bikes around us, was thrilling. I loved the games they played at the campsite. Getting used to the lifestyle wasn’t that hard; I felt like I fit in. Considering all that was going on in my life. Your thought has a lot more members; hopefully, we can fit in there too.”

“I’ll inform my man. We should be able to get your cuts ready for a ceremony in two weeks, but we need to get you moved out of here first, Cora. You would have been a member anyway, even if it was honorary, because you are my daughter, and I was hoping you would ride with us. When’s settlement?” Dad asked, turning his gaze back to me.

“Spoke to the buyer that I would be gone in two days; he can move in on the weekend, and settlement is another week or so, paperwork done and dusted,” I replied, looking back down at the ring on my finger, finding it hard to believe that we were a couple that was now engaged and had not even known each other a year yet. It felt right, and that was all that

counted.

“Good, that’s doable. Xavier, I would like you to sign a prenup, nothing fancy, just something

to protect Cora and her estate, and her inheritance.” Dad’s voice was his no-nonsense voice, which I’d heard him use on his men and on someone over the phone, this whole ‘telling Dad! was engaged’ hadn’t gone as I had planned, and I didn’t think I would get poor Xavier grilled like this. I guess I didn’t think at all, with my excitement.

“Yes, sir. I was going to suggest something along those lines. If you can get one drawn up, I will sign it.” It warmed my insides hearing he was willing to sign a prenup, and I didn’t need to bring it up, not that I think Xavier would rip me off, but after my uncle’s situation, it was the wisest thing to do; who knows what will happen in the future. Trust was always being tested in one way or another.

“Dad, why not do a double wedding? Think about it; you’re not young anymore.” I joked, and watched the tip of Dad’s ears go pink, and Ruby started giggling, her hand over her mouth; anyone with eyes can see how smitten they are with each other.

What’s that saying? Love at first sight?

Seeing it in action was believing.

A grin started on my mouth; I couldn’t stop it, as I watched Dad’s ears go redder.

Instead of making any response, Dad continued with what he had on his mind.

Something far more serious than marriage.

“The lads are set up for tonight, expecting the delivery van to arrive earlier than scheduled. Hacker sent a message; they picked up the tracking movement on the vans and sent out a drone to pick up their movement. They will reach the stopover around three in the morning; the men are ready and have spread out to cover all directions that the shooter may take. We don’t anticipate him shooting at night; there are too few vehicles. But we are ready in case he does.” I nod at this information; we need to catch these people.

“Dad, do you need to be here for that, or can you go home with us?” I asked; so much can be done on a computer for our part, and we don’t need to be waiting around for news.

“No reason for us to be here; we move as planned.” Dad must have thought the same as i

did.

“Then tonight we start packing, and tomorrow we start sending our things out of here. Do we use the van, or are we sending it by chopper?” Xavier asked as we moved to the door to head upstairs to start packing.

“Chopper, it holds a lot of gear and can do a round trip in three to four hours.” That was the last of our afternoon; boxes came up to our rooms, staff started to whisper, and by dinner. time, the chopper left with the first load of gear. Most of mine was gone; I hadn’t really

accumulated a lot, other than the clothes we just bought and a few small items. Most of it was what I brought here with me; even my car was loaded on the chopper, having loaded it up with my stuff. The things that I kept from my mother were still in a storage shed I rented. I had no interest in them, but maybe now that Dad’s with me, he might be interested in them.

Morning had the last of our possessions on the chopper; nothing was left here, and I took a few things that I liked that were part of my purchase of this house.
