Chapter 158

Ruby POV

OUR Home.

That’s what Demetri called it.

That has a nice ring to it, and seeing it come into view took my breath away.

Cora and I had been talking about doing things together.

Since we only know each other, it won’t take long to find something we both want to do, besides parties and galas, spas. We are both girls who like to be kept active, and a party girl was never something either of us was into. But if Demetri’s job calls for it, we will attend and suffer the luxury those parties have and the eye candy we will be attached to.

Yum.

Demetri looks good for his age, not that he is that old, but he has kept himself fit and yummy. Yeah, they are our eye candy, not the other way around, although Cora scrubs up well, whereas I have gained a few pounds. Will need to use that gym they showed me, and see if I can tone up a little, and get rid of this muffin top, as Cora calls it.

Demetri had suggested my one small cafe, where both of us could work; Cora could do the books; she’s good at that, and both of us can serve, and maybe get a couple of servers so that we can do the other work. If we say yes, we want to give it a try, Demetri said he knows of a few small cafes close by, and one near his office in the city, that we can look at taking over. It’s still up in the air because that’s a huge commitment, and I want a break from working seven days a week. We’ll see how it goes once we have settled down here. Too much going on, and to be honest, I am scared, and at the same time, glad to have Cora, a familiar female face to confide in. I still can’t get over that I will be called a ‘mother’, like a full-grown step-daughter, and that we get along so well, not like the big bad step-mother stories you hear. I am no step-mum from hell, or at least I hope I’m not.

What I didn’t expect was to be put on the spot, to kick out a one-night stand that wanted more, clutching hold of a walking, talking ATM. I have seen these girls enough at the club to know they are a waste of what could have been a nice girl.

Stephanie looked every bit a scrubber, a girl who spreads her legs for all the men, and was relaxing with her feet on the lounge and yeah, not happening. She had a set of lunges on her when Xavier picked her up and dropped her on the ground, which I liked, and I noticed Cora filming it on her phone.

“You handled that well,” Cora said and high-fived me, our hands slapping together.

“Be on notice: if we don’t get along, or if I find you not doing your job, or you are argumentative, or you steal, you will be removed no excuses,” I announced to the staff who had arrived from nowhere to watch the spectacle. The staff darted away, not lingering around; they had had it easy with Demetri being away for so long. It was time to whip them back into shape.

Demetri gave us a brief tour of the inside of the home; Xavier cheered when he saw a fully equipped gym.

“You have the same next door; this house is almost the mirror image of that one, both built by the same builder at the same time. Other than the furnishings and decor, it’s the same.” That was interesting; I wonder how many houses in this area are identical. Would that make it easier for burglars?

The staff from next door arrived, and they mingled with this household. Demetri gained their attention and introduced us all. I got the expected looks of jealousy, and a few that looked me up and down, trying to assess what made me special to catch Demetri’s eyes, but I knew they wouldn’t ask out loud; more like talk about me behind my back.

“Anything you want to add, Sweetheart?” Demetri addressed me after setting out some new guidelines.

“I don’t tolerate gossip behind my back. Got something to say? Say it to my face. I hear gossip; you will be instantly dismissed. That goes for Cora’s staff; neither of us wants to hear your opinions of us when you can’t say it to our faces. Aggie will set up some times for us to meet one-on-one over the next few days. Please share a brief history of when you started here and what you do. By the end of the month, I hope to have reviewed all the workplace agreements and made up some new ones. Cora, do you want to tell your team? If you have any questions, save them for your interview. Thank you, that’s all.” The staff looked worried, and so they should be. I am not the same as I was; I shed the name Scones and started a new chapter. I want a happy home. If they are not happy with the changes, please let me know now rather than hearing it behind my back.

“Same. Drew will organise a time for each of you once I have reviewed your agreement, and changes might be made, not just in the agreement, but in how I want my home to be run.” Like me, neither of us had staff in the house till she brought that other house, and had learned a few things about running it from that, but having had the experience of running a whole emergency department, I doubt running her home would be much different, and Cora promised to help me if I get stuck. Staff rosters and small control I can do; I’ve been doing that for the kitchen for years. I can’t see how much harder it would be for a whole house. Cora has a male house head; he appears to be nice, but he runs a tight schedule, which will

suit Cora and Xavier. I am more used to having women around the clubhouse, so having a female head of staff suits me better.

The staff meeting was quick, and then they left; none had questions yet. This was a shock to them, but it shouldn’t have been; they would have seen both choppers bringing boxes into both houses. They may save their questions for the interview, or they may do what I warned them not to do and discuss it behind our backs.

Cora and Xavier left to sort out their possessions, get set up, and return to have dinner here. I have asked the cook to do something simple and left it to them; none of us has food allergies. It will be interesting to see what the cook does; she knows nothing about us, other than that I am Demetri’s woman and Cora was his daughter. We haven’t offered any other

information, as far as I am aware.

The guards know more, but Demetri assured me that they do not have loose lips.

My room was beautiful, bigger than any I have ever been in, not that I have been in many, but this master room was larger than the room I had at Cora’s other house. It was massive, a huge king-size bed that I am glad I don’t have to make each day if I don’t want to. The benefits of being Demetri’s woman- not that I am going to take advantage of his hard-earned money- but these perks are nice, and I will gladly enjoy them. Together, Demetri and I put away our belongings and as Demetri didn’t have much, he assisted me, ensuring I had the largest portion in the wardrobe, the top drawers in the dresser, and the bottom two shelves in the bathroom; he was kind, considerate, and mine.

Demetri led me to his office once we had finished with the bedroom and offered to share his

office or have the room next door to his. I felt like I was intruding, taking up space in his office, since I had no clue what I would be doing yet. If he was disappointed, Demetri didn’t show it; he walked me to the other office and gave me the passwords to the computer and the code for the small safe, in the computer was files on each staff member, the work agreement, a wages app, which he will teach me, when payday got closer, planners for entertainment, you name it, I now had access to is, regarding the running of the house, I had no clue it was going to be such a huge job.

My mind is already swimming, and we hadn’t ever started yet.

Yeah, going to need Cora even more on payroll day; she knows how to do them, and Demetri said both households use the same program. Never thought of household staff having to clock in and out, and the security camera set up above the time clock ensures no one was clocking someone else’s card in and out.

Will get there eventually, I guess.
