Chapter 160

Ruby was picking up the computer like a pro, considering she had little exposure to them. She’s smart as a whip and will have the household app under control in no time. It might take a bit longer for her to feel confident with the wages, but I am sure she will get the hang of it in no time, and Cora can guide her when she needs it.
We were in the middle of going through sss when Xavier and Cora entered the room; luckily, I hadn’t started anything naughty with Ruby. I don’t think I would feel comfortable with Cora seeing me in action like that, and Ruby would have been mortified. That, though, was enough for my hard-on shaft to deflate in a rush.
Xavier asked Cora to play the recording. Oddball had lost his mind, or is part of this, and is playing a dangerous game if he is, or very gullible; both work. But one was worse than the other; I’ve got to keep an open mind that Oddball could be had, and knowing the little I do about him, he will stick by his decision, no matter how wrong it is.
I hung up my phone after talking to Danny; he was running the men in the field.
“The men are on alert; they won’t retreat, but move to another site, close by, possibly across the road, where they can get a good view of where they believe the shooter may pick for a place to hide. They will be careful, and have flak jackets on, just in case. We have men in the trees; they are confident- that’s what counts. They have been informed, and I need to trust their judgement while out on the field.” I would have gone mad by now if I worried every time the men went out into the field. Over the years, I have learned to trust them; it’s their life. All I
can do is keep them up to date with any relevant information we come across and leave the
final decision to them; it’s their lives at stake.
“Time to do some investigating on the club members; never thought I would ever say such a thing. So many have been lifelong friends. Bluey and Oddball, first.” Xavier suggested, looking sad as he spoke; this was not how he expected the end of his time at that club to be.
“Cora, is your computer up and running?” I moved towards the door; Ruby’s computer doesn’t need that sort of information on it. I don’t have concerns about her; it’s more that she
wouldn’t know what the program can do and could venture into areas best left alone.
“My main computer, no, but the laptop is always ready to go; it’s in my office.” We left for her office, I could have used my computer, but I know that she has the app on her computer, that has some abilities mine doesn’t, thanks to Hacker, he can’t remove it from her computer, but can remove the access to their, if they think about it, but then Cora would have it hack their computers, which she was good at, having for knowledge of their system.

Xavier drove, and we talked some more, trying to bounce ideas off each other. Ruby was a wealth of gossip, but nothing could be proven from what stories she had heard, as some could have been embellished or changed in the telling. But it was good to hear them and try to piece it all together. Xavier was the hardest hit with this. Ruby had been in the background for a long time and wasn’t as close to the club members as he was, although she was someone most came to vent with; that didn’t make them close friends, not like how she bonded with Cora. Cora was someone who listened to Ruby, instead of asking something from her.
Cora’s office was already neat, books away, no waiting boxes.
“You were busy,” I said as we headed to the table that held her laptop. Cora sat down and booted up the laptop, grabbing some paper and a pen, ready to take down notes. My girl was organised.
“Xavier helped. What do you want me to start on?”
“See if Bluey and Oddball have any connection outside of the club scene.”
“I’ll start with Bluey using both her road name and her real name, see what comes up. Also, I’l look for Scrubs, Strike, Dozer and Dizzy, as well as Oddball; might as well cover all the officers.” Cora opened an app I hadn’t seen before, and information came flooding in: every detail about the people she entered into the system. Name, age, parent, school, bank details, tax information- you name it, Cora was finding that information. Then Cora added some more parameters, and links to people appeared. I marvelled at what Cora was able to do and find out, and quicker than I can.
That program she uses was fantastic.
Ruby left the room to check on dinner; it would be ready soon. Cora continued to work, her fingers flying over the keyboard as time flew by.
“What’s this you are printing out?” Xavier asked as he headed to the printer.
“A short bio on Bluey, still working on the others, and the computer is thinking on the other links I asked for; maybe after dinner it will have more relevant information for us to work on.
“Can you still access the club’s server?” I asked; we should get on that and see what’s going
“Yes, it will be hard for Hacker to block me, since he gave me the permissions and can override any order to block me out, with the authority he gave me. It was silly of him, but at the time I guess he didn’t see any problem with all the work I had been doing.”
“Can you check it out, see if there are any comments on the stakeout?”

“You can check it out here; try this.” Cora gave me a login and password to the server, and I pulled it up on my phone.
“The delivery vans are on the way; they will be there tonight. I have sent off that information to my man. They are resting right now and will be up and ready for when the vans arrive at that rest stop.” I was talking more to Xavier than Cora, although she would be half-listening
to me prattling on.
“Sweetheart, dinner is being served,” Ruby called out at the door.
“Two secs, need to start this search; it will take time. Maybe, if we’re lucky, it will be finished when we have dinner.” Cora called out, not looking away from the computer.
True to her word, in less than two minutes, Cora stood up and moved towards the door, where we were waiting for her.
We ate in the smaller family dining room; spaghetti was the cook’s idea of something light, with some roasted vegetables and garlic bread.
Cora’s phone chimed, and she fished it out of her jeans pocket.
Read it and hissed before putting it face down on the table.
“Problem?” Ruby asked, never one to be shy about asking the questions we all wanted to ask, but thought it was polite not to ask.
“Jake’s rehabilitation centre is in this city.”
“And.”
“They have asked if I would come visit him; even if it’s just this one time, it would help his recovery.” Cora shrugged like it was no big deal, but even I, who knew little of what went on, knew it was a big deal.
“Go, get answers,” Ruby said softly, touching her hand that was by the phone.
“Do you want to go, need company?” Xavier asked before I could.
“Probably, but not right now; I will contact them later, when we have answers to that problem in the office.” Cora was not saying a lot, and looking around, seeing ears close by, I got that she wouldn’t want fuel for the gossipers, that even though threatened with dismissal, they would still talk behind your back.
We talked about the engagement party, and whether to do official invitations or send out pretty emails; in the end, Ruby talked Cora into using a party planner, which I thought was a great idea. The party will double up as an introduction to my friends and social circle, as we

haven’t had an official party for that-only a press release announcing her to the world.
I have a ring burning a hole in my jacket, and maybe, just maybe, I can ask Ruby to marry me and have a double engagement party. Hope that would not make Cora feel bad, taking some of the attention away from her.
