Chapter 174
Xavier (Gunner)
We watched the SUV disappear down the road. I was having mixed feelings; it had changed, or
should I say it became stronger, when I said I do and put that ring on her finger.
Worry.
Protection.
Be by her side all the time.
All understandable.
But not realistic.
A new side of me to adjust to, watching my girl go out into the world and stand on her feet.
Cora’s a strong woman, and doesn’t need me hovering around her, protecting her, all the time. If I
were honest, I need her more than she needs me.
Emotionally, that is.
The first woman to find a way to my heart, and lock herself in there.
Yes, I had women in my youth that I thought I loved, but I got love and lust mixed up, and when the
one I thought would be my forever, I found her spreading her legs for another. I backed away and
never said a word. That woman I never touched again pushed her away. She tried the ‘I am
expecting a baby’ trick. I suggested she get a DNA test done because it could be anyone’s, and
rattled off three names I had known she had been with since the day I caught her the first time.
Cora was the first to find a way in, and now I am hooked.
I turned to see Demetri, with an expression that was the same as mine.
“I agree, Coins, I agree, I don’t like them out of my sight either.” I tapped him on the shoulder, in a
friendly way; actually, it should be a father/son way, because he was my father-in-law now. That bit
keeps slipping out of my mind, as I never really saw him as that. I saw him as a billionaire first, then
the president of a club, and Cora didn’t call him dad for a while, so it never sank in that I should be
trying to impress him; instead, we made him prove he was worthy to be called Dad.
Guess I will have to factor that in.
I knew but ignored it, made a friend through protecting Cora, and with the club work we were both
involved in.

Friend.
Yes, that’s what Demetri was to me. I realised. A friend before a father figure, before Coins, the
President of the club.
We walked back inside; we had work to do. It wasn’t a silent walk; Demetri was chuckling to himself, and he had his hand on my shoulder, in a friendly manner, as we both talked about how much those two ladies had taken over our lives and our thoughts.
In Cora’s office, Demetri opened the laptop, and I opened the computer. We both had a lot to do Before tomorrow, when I receive my cut and new road name, I tried to get that from Demetri, but he was reluctant and wouldn’t share any details. The men should be here in a few hours, and Demetri will get a full re ne that they don’t put in writing.
The spreadsheets thrted were filling up fast; the graph was changing with each new entry, and so far it

not need to keep watch. Oddball was getting his head together and becoming an open-minded man, he learned a valuable lesson over this. Investigate all the information brought to him; he couldn’t just dismiss it as he had and let someone blind him. He had a responsibility to the whole
club, not the few that he trusted.
But we all learn from our mistakes, there are the kind you never forget.
“Can we get more on the uncle, like security footage, from around the time we knew something was going down, find out where he was, get more of his phone records, like does he have a burner
phone? We need so much more; I asked Demetri. He was better at that side of it than I was.
Thave a team that can dig deeper, they are already investigating the death of Dianne, Cora’s mother, as she asked me to. I will contact them and get them to dig into the uncle further.”
“What about Dianne’s mobile phone? Was it ever disconnected? Could he be using her phone all this time? The thought suddenly hit me.
“He might have continued it and then played it off as ignorance. It’s possible if you have it set up to be paid automatically, and not inform the phone company that she was no longer the holder of the phone. I continued as I thought more of it.
“On it. Demetris fingers flew over the keyboard with new interest. We had more to do. Each time we think we have an answer, more questions pop up.
I printed out more for our piles, and when the girls return, if they are not too tired, they can go through those piles and place them in piles under the main names we have found. The spreadsheet has most of them, but Demetri likes hard copies as proof. When it goes to court, we want them in jail, and from there, let them get settled in. Demetri has some contacts in the jail, that will ensure their stay will be a memorable one.
“Found the phone, you were right, he had been using Dianne’s old one. I am pulling transcripts going back to when Dianne died. I am wondering if he had used her phone before she died, and Dianne started asking questions, and said she needed to be gone.” Demetri was fuming, and I bet feeling guilty
