Raelynn's head immediately began to throb with a vicious ache. She paced the length of the room before she finally found her voice. "Shane is still going to the same school as Lily?"
"Exactly!" Chloe practically yelled through the speaker. "A friend of mine has a dad on the kindergarten board. Remember when I asked him to look into Lily's stolen spot? Well, he just called to tell me that Sebastian threw his weight around to force the school to open up a brand-new, totally unapproved spot just for Shane."
Chloe let out a dark, mocking laugh, clearly holding back a string of curses. "If he's so damn powerful, why didn't he just force them to make an extra spot in the first place? Why did he have to steal Lily's? And now he won't even put the kid in a different school! What happens when he inevitably bumps into Lily?"
That was exactly the nightmare scenario Raelynn feared.
She had rationally assumed that after the drama, Sebastian would simply secure a spot for Shane at a different elite academy. She never expected him to force his way through like this.
And with the school term starting in days, trying to transfer Lily to a different prestigious school was mathematically impossible. Unlike Sebastian, Raelynn didn't have the kind of terrifying power that made people bend rules and shatter protocols.
If Lily lost this spot, her entire education plan would be derailed. In Kingsford, getting into elite schools was cutthroat even for billionaires.
Raelynn felt a chaotic knot tighten in her chest. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Unless Sebastian personally does the daily drop-offs and pick-ups for Shane, the chances of them running into each other shouldn't be too high."
"True," Chloe conceded, taking a deep breath. "Given Sebastian's status, and the fact that Shane is a Vance kid, he doesn't really have a reason to hang around a kindergarten parking lot."
Even so, Raelynn couldn't shake the creeping dread.
Chloe quickly tried to soothe her panic. "Don't stress too much. At the end of the day, our girl's last name is Hudson. And my brother, Ian, is moving back to the country next month. He's legally Lily's father on all the paperwork. Even if Sebastian bumps into her by some freak accident, he'd never in a million years connect the dots and think she's his. We've got an ironclad backup plan."
Raelynn let out a slow exhale, agreeing with the logic. Beyond Lily legally being registered under Ian's name, Raelynn had another safety net: Sebastian had signed the divorce agreement voluntarily surrendering all custody rights. He legally had no leg to stand on to take her back.
To protect her daughter, she had meticulously prepared every possible failsafe.
Thinking of Ian's impending return and the fact that the final divorce papers were just around the corner finally helped ease the suffocating tension in her chest.
"We'll just take it one step at a time. No matter what happens, Lily is staying with me."
She knew she had to build her career rapidly to gain enough leverage to defend herself against the Croix family. Only then could Lily step fully into the light, rather than living like a secret to be guarded.
For a fleeting second, she considered calling Sebastian to ask him to move Shane. But remembering she had already blocked his number on every platform, she swiftly killed the thought.
