The rough pull on her arm spun her around, and by the time she looked back, the blur of a hand was already swinging toward her face.
It happened far too fast.
Raelynn's expression darkened, but just as she braced herself to react, someone else yanked her out of harm's way.
Julian Yves's cold, deep voice followed. "Nothing is conclusive yet. Let's wait for the definitive results."
Raelynn looked up. Julian was still holding her arm, unconsciously stepping in front of her to block the slap Seraphina had aimed at her face.
He had taken on a bizarrely... protective stance.
She had no idea what they were talking about, nor what had triggered this sudden ambush.
Julian's reaction didn't go unnoticed by Sebastian, who had just arrived on the scene.
His dark, unreadable gaze fixed onto Julian's face.
Seraphina was even more stunned.
She couldn't believe Julian would defend Raelynn. She had been inches away from returning that slap.
"Julian?" Seraphina's eyes were filled with disappointment.
Raelynn finally processed what was happening. Ambushed right at the end of her shift, she dropped any pretense of friendliness.
Pulling her arm free from Julian's grasp, she swept a cold glance over the people in front of her. "Reason? Motive? Have you lost your minds?"
Seraphina's expression was freezing, glaring at Raelynn in pure disbelief. "How could you use a child as a test subject?! Just to satisfy your own ambition for success? Are you even human, Raelynn?!"
The harsh, furious accusations crashed down on her out of nowhere.
Raelynn despised these baseless setups. With zero patience, she cut her off. "Skip the moral grandstanding and speak English."
Seeing Raelynn's completely unrepentant attitude, Seraphina's eyes burned with cold fury. "Shane went into acute anaphylaxis! It was caused by an overdose of an ingredient in his cardiovascular medication! He's already in emergency treatment, and his blood toxicology report came back. It's the exact same compound from NexusMind's current drug trial!"
Raelynn stared at her.
