The old man sneered. "Sebastian's wife."
Leo choked on his words for a second before letting out a harsh laugh. "Her? Well, that's exactly her style. She's always pulling disgusting stunts like this."
Thinking back to Seraphina Vance's face, Louis's expression darkened even further. "So her character really is that rotten. I knew it the moment she stood in front of me. Her eyes were full of calculation. She paraded around acting like the esteemed daughter-in-law of the Croix family, but she's far too cunning for her own good. She's no saint. If it weren't for the Croix family's reputation, I would have had her thrown out tonight."
Did she think he had lived for eighty-four years just to be played for a fool?
Marching in here to demand recognition, stealing someone else's credit with such blatant arrogance!
Leo's disdain for Raelynn only deepened. He hadn't expected her to stoop this low today. "Just ignore her, Grandpa. Her position as Mrs. Croix is hanging by a thread these days, so she's probably desperate for a powerful backer. That's why she came here trying to steal the credit."
Louis looked surprised.
So that was the truth of it?
But when Sebastian had brought her in, they certainly hadn't looked like a couple on the rocks.
Leo didn't elaborate on the messy details.
He already knew Raelynn's marriage into the Croix family was highly questionable, and this latest stunt only made him despise her more.
After comforting his grandfather for a few more minutes, Leo headed back out to entertain the guests.
The guest list was stacked with heavyweights.
The entire resort staff was on high alert.
When Dr. Evelyn Hayes arrived, she kept it extremely low-profile, intentionally slipping in through a back entrance. Given her monumental status in the medical field, a grand entrance would have completely hijacked the spotlight from the birthday boy.
She moved with a brisk, energetic stride, walking much faster than Louis Flynn could manage.
Seeing her, Louis quickly stood up. "Evelyn! You actually made the trip!"
They had grown up in the same neighborhood, and she had practically bossed him around their entire childhood.
Dr. Hayes gestured for someone to set down her birthday gift.
"I have to rush back for a conference soon, so I won't be staying for dinner."
Louis knew how demanding her schedule was. "That's perfectly fine. Just having you here is an honor."
