As Sebastian walked in, he casually unbuttoned his suit jacket, dropping his gaze to Raelynn. "What document is so urgent?"
Raelynn knew exactly what he was implying.
He was annoyed she had shown up completely uninvited.
Terrified that she might expose her true identity and ruin his precious Seraphina's reputation.
She let out a soft scoff, walked over, and placed the document on his desk, carefully avoiding his eyes as she tapped the cover page.
Sebastian glanced down at the desk. He caught the title on the first page.
— Post-Nuptial Asset Clarification.
"I'm planning to buy a house for my grandfather using my personal savings. I need to take out a mortgage, so I need you to sign this just to officially state that I'm the sole financier."
Raelynn kept her voice as cool and steady as possible, trying to sound completely normal.
If she had just flat-out told him it was an addendum to the divorce papers, she knew Sebastian would have scrutinized every single page like a hawk.
That wasn't an option.
She had to play the long game.
Sebastian barely glanced at the contract. "Why are you taking out a loan? Tell me how much you need, I'll transfer it to you."
He knew better than anyone how utterly broken her family was.
The Ortiz family was tiny and completely powerless.
For years, Raelynn had carried the weight of it entirely on her own.
It didn't surprise her that Sebastian offered to pay.
She knew he was always incredibly generous with money.
But in the past, she had never asked for it, and he had never offered it.
Because he didn't love her, so he didn't care.
Right now, though, she needed a bulletproof excuse.
Kingsford had the highest real estate prices in the entire country. Everyone knew she worked in the ER—a standard salary. No one would believe she had massive piles of cash lying around. Using a mortgage as the excuse for this contract was flawless logic.
"To prevent any disputes over community property down the line. I don't want anyone saying I bought real estate for my side of the family using your money. I don't want the headache of any unpredictable legal mess later on."
Sebastian's dark eyes slowly drifted up to her face.
She was refusing his money, preferring to drown in debt and stress instead of taking a dime from him.
It only took him two seconds to reply, his voice completely flat. "Suit yourself."
Raelynn had specifically pulled out the last page where the signature was required.
He glanced at it, but didn't pick up the pen.
Instead, he picked up the entire packet and started flipping through it.
That single movement made Raelynn's heart violently skip a beat.
