Dr. Quinn considered it for a moment and found the logic sound.
She released Raelynn's wrist and waved Sebastian over. "Let me have a look at you. Let your wife sit down and catch her breath."
Sebastian was deep in thought.
His dark lashes lowered, only fluttering upward at the sound of Dr. Quinn's voice. From the corner of his eye, his gaze lingered on Raelynn's deceptively calm profile for two long seconds before he remained firmly in his chair. "I'm perfectly fine. I had a full physical recently."
He had seemingly made up his mind.
He wanted Dr. Quinn to get a thorough, undeniable reading on Raelynn's condition.
Raelynn's heart gave a violent lurch.
She instinctively glanced his way.
She hadn't expected to find him already watching her, directly colliding with the unfathomable depths of his eyes.
His stare was sharp and predatory.
Beneath the surface calm, he made her feel like she had nowhere to hide.
Raelynn held her breath, her eyes stinging. Today felt like a targeted execution. One wrong step, and she would be condemned to a fate worse than death.
Her darling Lily...
She would never let the Croix family steal her away!
"Why are you both so resistant to seeking medical advice? This won't do. How do you expect to carry on the family line if you don't take care of your bodies?" Dr. Quinn scolded them with the stern authority of an elder physician.
Matilda, clearly hyper-fixated on the words "given birth," frowned in deep displeasure. "Seven years. Any other family would have demanded a divorce if a daughter-in-law failed to produce an heir after seven years. But have I ever pressured you? Have I ever threatened to throw you out? I've been incredibly lenient. If there is something wrong with your body, you are actively delaying the Croix lineage. If you have a problem, we treat it. Stop being so stubborn."
Attack after attack.
They were cornering her from every direction.
Damned if she did, damned if she didn't.
It felt like an eternity before Dr. Quinn finally spoke. "I was right."
Sebastian's head snapped up.
Dr. Quinn looked genuinely bewildered. "I didn't misread it earlier. Her pulse clearly indicates she is physically quite different from a woman who has never conceived. Traditional medicine has very distinct markers for previous pregnancies, and on this, I would bet my life."
Matilda was stunned. "What does this mean? Raelynn?"
Their gazes felt like a barrage of knives. Raelynn's face was ashen. She slowly pulled her hand back and rolled down her sleeve.
"Yeah."
Her voice was incredibly soft.
Sebastian's thumb halted entirely on the lighter.
Raelynn lifted her head, meeting his dark, storm-filled eyes without a shred of hesitation. Word by word, she declared, "We did have a baby."
