Raelynn didn't flinch away from his stare. The moment the words left her mouth, she watched the man's knuckles turn bone-white as his grip on the lighter tightened.
Sebastian seemed struck by an intense wave of shock. For a fraction of a second, Raelynn watched his pupils constrict.
She found it almost comical.
So Sebastian was capable of feeling something after all.
He could actually be moved by her, though she had no idea what kind of emotion was churning behind those dark eyes.
"What... what do you mean, you had a baby?" Matilda demanded, her grip tightening painfully on Raelynn's shoulder.
Sebastian didn't speak.
But he was waiting for the answer, too.
Raelynn gave a small, indifferent smile, as if she couldn't care less. She let Dr. Quinn's reading hang in the air before saying, "I got pregnant once. But I miscarried. I just never told Sebastian."
The atmosphere instantly froze.
Especially with how casually she uttered his name, hiding such a colossal secret from him all this time.
It added a layer of profound, bitter irony to the room.
"When did this happen?! Why on earth didn't you tell the family immediately when you found out you were pregnant? And how is a miscarriage the same as giving birth?" Matilda was furious. If Raelynn had just spoken up, the family could have given her the best medical care and saved the child!
Raelynn anticipated the heavy skepticism.
She kept her composure, deliberately keeping her eyes off the eerily silent Sebastian.
Even though she could feel the burning weight of his stare.
"Dr. Quinn will tell you," Raelynn said smoothly. "A miscarriage takes a massive toll on a woman's vitality and blood flow. The resulting pulse is practically identical to someone who carried to term. I didn't take proper care of myself afterward, so the physical damage was much more severe."
Dr. Quinn nodded in agreement. "She's not wrong. That concept is well-documented in our medical texts. However, your body took an immense amount of damage. Was this an accidental miscarriage or a voluntary termination?"
That question.
