Raelynn smoothly lowered her gaze, masking any trace of reaction.
"What happened?" Leo asked, noting the sudden shift.
Seraphina glanced at Raelynn and didn't bother hiding it, knowing Raelynn was already aware of the situation.
"My patent claim got revoked," she gritted out, shaking her head in frustrated disbelief. "Faye's camp claims they have the original formula data too. Since she's an industry giant, they sided with her."
She honestly couldn't wrap her head around it. Faye was practically untouchable, refusing to make a single public appearance, even when her own patent was on the line. But then again, true elites possessed that kind of arrogance. Faye had legions of people to handle her trivial affairs. With figures like Dr. Adrian Moreno as her senior and Professor Alistair Finch as her mentor, Faye had more than enough capital to act like royalty.
Leo shot a side-eye at Raelynn. "Don't sweat it. Just focus on your current project. You can apply for other patents later. But a golden project like this? That's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Wouldn't you agree, Raelynn?"
Raelynn easily translated Leo's backhanded comfort. He was giving Seraphina a golden pedestal to stand on.
While simultaneously insinuating that Raelynn was a talentless hack who couldn't even compare.
She couldn't hold back a soft, amused scoff. The elevator doors slid open, and she stepped inside, turning to face them. "Well then. I wish you both the best of luck."
Just as she spoke,
Sebastian finished his call and rounded the corner.
Raelynn hammered the 'close door' button without a second's hesitation.
Sebastian didn't seem to notice. His gaze slid right past her as he escorted Seraphina into the adjacent elevator.
***
Raelynn soon received her own confirmation from the patent office.
It made perfect sense that Seraphina and Leo were utterly clueless. She hadn't filed the application under her English alias; she had used her real name.
And given their staggering arrogance and blinding prejudice, they would never in a million years connect the dots back to her.
Some people were simply destined to rot inside their own narrow worldviews, forever blind to the vastness of reality.
That evening,
Chloe Hudson met Raelynn for dinner.
There was zero chance Sebastian was oblivious to this!
Raelynn took a bite of her Yam and Blueberry Purée and chewed thoughtfully. "They're attending publicly under the guise of professional project networking. No one is going to point any fingers at them."
Still, there was no denying that Sebastian was actively weaponizing his network for Seraphina's benefit.
His reach was vast enough to shield a mistress from any storm, yet somehow too small to keep his own wife from standing in the pouring rain.
Fortunately, Raelynn had made her peace with this reality a long time ago.
She could brush this off without a second thought.
Because in just a few short days, a ninety-million-dollar contract would be signed and the money wired directly into her accounts. As long as she was getting paid, she was perfectly happy.
The very next day,
Raelynn received a call from Dr. Adrian Moreno. "The Kingsford University Anniversary Gala is tomorrow. Since you're stepping into your role as Associate Professor soon, they need you there as a special guest."
