At formal events like this, seating arrangements were never trivial; they were a direct reflection of status and power.
Leo genuinely believed Raelynn lacked the qualifications to occupy such a prestigious spot.
After all, they knew her background. How exactly was a nobody with zero accomplishments going to introduce herself?
Raelynn was fully aware of the thinly veiled disdain and doubt radiating from Leo.
He thought she was entirely unworthy of the chair.
"As for Seraphina," Leo continued, glancing from Raelynn back to Preston, "she is a Kingsford alumna and easily qualifies as an honorary guest. More importantly, she's attending today as Sebastian's plus-one. It's only right they sit together. I think Raelynn's card must have been misplaced by mistake."
A mistake was the only logical explanation his mind could conjure.
Leo's defense brought a wave of relief to Seraphina's embarrassed face.
When Preston was raising hell about it a moment ago, she had panicked, but now she felt justified. It probably was just a mix-up.
Julian remained silent.
He had zero interest in their petty seating drama. He was only curious about one thing: if Raelynn cared so much about sitting here, it meant she still cared about Sebastian.
But if that was true.
How much sincerity could she possibly have for Ian Hudson?
"Mr. Moreno, the event is about to begin. There's no point in arguing over this. Sebastian doesn't mind me sitting here, so why should you?" Seraphina smiled.
She was now entirely convinced the card had been placed there in error.
She was Sebastian's official date. It only made sense for the university to seat them side-by-side.
Or perhaps.
Raelynn had snuck in early and swapped the cards herself just to cause trouble.
Raelynn no longer felt any anger toward them. Whenever she spoke, they plugged their ears. Whenever she acted, they covered their eyes. They viewed her through a lens of monumental prejudice that nothing could shatter.
However.
A panicked Kingsford staff member rushed over. Seraphina offered him a gracious smile. "Hello there. There was a mix-up with the seating here, wasn't there?"
She wanted him to confirm that Raelynn had maliciously swapped the cards.
As the staff member approached, his eyes widened in horror when he saw Raelynn's name card banished to the back rows.
He scrambled to retrieve it, gently placing it back beside Sebastian. In one fluid motion, he snatched Seraphina's card and banished it to the rear table.
Completely ignoring the way Seraphina's face instantly froze, he turned to Raelynn with a deeply apologetic bow. "Mrs. Croix, I am so incredibly sorry. Someone must have carelessly moved things around. You are absolutely supposed to be in the front row, right next to Professor Adrian Moreno. The administration gave me strict orders that your designated seat was not to be touched."
The staff member's unexpected and overwhelmingly respectful apology.
Instantly shattered the composure of everyone standing there.
Sebastian, who had remained silently seated through the entire verbal war, slowly lifted his gaze. Crossing his long legs, his dark, bottomless eyes locked onto Raelynn.
Whatever thoughts were turning in his mind remained hidden as he finally spoke in a quiet, even tone. "Then take your seat."
