Ever since Seraphina's ambitions grew from academic research to commercial enterprise, Leo had been a staunch believer in her project's potential.
Raelynn didn't know the exact figure he had poured into it.
But with this disaster, his investment was essentially wiped out.
Preston let out a heavy sigh. "With that surgeon's connections, they can sweep any mistake under the rug. When we were looking to partner with Gracefield to deploy our robots, we couldn't find a single trace of his past blunders. If we had actually signed with them, we'd be the ones dragged through the mud today."
Since the surgeon was there to build his credentials, he would have insisted on being involved in every major surgery.
That meant he would have been using their equipment constantly.
If they had secured the contract with Gracefield.
They would have been the ones caught in the crossfire of this scandal.
Raelynn realized the gravity of the situation. Who could have guessed Gracefield was harboring such a dangerously privileged liability?
She suddenly tapped her forehead and smiled in relief. "Thank God she left Longstride Technologies when she did."
Seraphina had been so desperate to break away, taking her team and the project with her.
She had paraded around so arrogantly, and Raelynn was incredibly grateful she hadn't fought to keep her. When Sebastian offered to buy out the contract, signing it was the best decision she ever made.
Otherwise, Longstride Technologies would be facing the firing squad right now.
A fatal accident in the medical field was a catastrophic blow.
Even the largest corporations took years to recover from that kind of PR nightmare.
Preston looked equally stunned. "Longstride already went through a massive credibility crisis recently. If they had been dragged into this, it would have dragged us down too. And as her boss, you would have been the one forced to clean up her mess."
Raelynn would have taken the brunt of the devastation.
She leaned back in her chair and shook her head with a faint laugh. "I suppose I should thank my ex-husband. To keep his precious darling from suffering under my management, he paid her buyout fee and completely severed our ties."
"You're still laughing? You're making jokes out of your own scars," Preston chided, his voice laced with protective irritation.
Every time Sebastian moved mountains for that other woman, it was another knife in Raelynn's heart.
Raelynn blinked, her expression entirely unbothered. "Anyway, all we have to do now is watch the fire burn from a safe distance. It's quite nice."
