Raelynn didn't answer.
It was obvious, anyway.
Sebastian Croix was only ever willing to speak to her when no one else was watching.
In front of others, he always maintained a strict "distance" protocol.
"Did you take your medicine?" Sebastian asked, completely unfazed by her silence.
Raelynn didn't even turn her head. "I took it."
"Liar."
His tone didn't shift at all.
It was the voice of a man who knew her well, yet it lacked any genuine care. He was simply stating a fact.
Raelynn was speechless.
She had almost forgotten.
When they were first married, even if Sebastian didn't love her, he at least had basic decency.
Whenever she got sick, she absolutely refused to take medicine. She would just lie in bed and sleep, barely moving for a day or two, practically hibernating.
That was when he learned about her stubborn refusal to swallow pills.
Once, to get her to take her medicine, he had braved a bitterly awful herbal brew himself. He dragged her out from under the covers while she was still half-asleep, pinched her cheeks between his thumb and fingers to force her mouth open, and made her swallow it sip by sip.
They hadn't even been married for a month at that point.
Afterward, Sebastian had said, "If you actually die during our first month of marriage, people will start whispering that I'm cursed."
Raelynn had never felt an elevator ride dragging on this painfully long.
Sebastian's sudden show of concern made her even more uncomfortable.
"This is a cold remedy from the hospital. Try it." Sebastian casually extended his arm, easily dropping a brown paper bag into her arms.
Forced to catch it, Raelynn frowned. "I don't need it. Thanks."
She truly hadn't expected this.
She had joined those groups when they were newly married, back when she was incredibly happy.
She had just wanted to feel closer to Sebastian's world, since that was his social circle.
But she never posted her face.
Some people knew she existed, but they knew absolutely nothing about her private life.
"If you haven't left those groups, you've probably seen some negative comments about me buying a house for Seraphina."
"Are they wrong?" Raelynn shot back.
Sebastian clearly had no intention of debating right and wrong with her. He looked at her with a calmness bordering on apathy. "I want you to clear the air."
Raelynn thought she had misheard him. "What?"
Sebastian glanced at the elevator display. They were three floors away from the lobby.
"She needs to build connections in elite circles. She'll be appearing on television programs. Her image can't be tarnished, and there certainly can't be any gossip." His dark eyes swept over Raelynn's pocket, where she kept her newly replaced phone.
Then, he simply reached over and plucked the phone from her pocket, catching her utterly off guard while her hands were full.
