"My apologies, Mr. Croix, but I have to decline. NexusMind isn't a one-man show. We have multiple shareholders, and none of them want to shake up our current stability."
The point was made.
There was nothing more to say.
Seraphina looked stunned, pure disbelief written on her face.
She had come with absolute sincerity, even using the implicit threat of pressing charges against Raelynn for the slap as leverage, and they still refused?
Sebastian didn't seem surprised. He stood up, fastening his suit jacket with one hand. "I understand."
He didn't push the issue.
However, this only filled Raelynn with a creeping sense of unease.
A man like Sebastian was deeply calculating; if he had come up with this plan, he fully intended to see it through to the end.
"Take care, Mr. Croix." Preston maintained his professional courtesy.
As she left, Seraphina shot Raelynn a resentful, icy glare.
Raelynn completely ignored it.
Just as they reached the door.
Sebastian paused. He turned slowly, casting a cold look at Raelynn before his gaze dropped to her legs. "Your pant leg is stained. You should get that cleaned up."
Raelynn looked down.
She just realized that the untreated scrape on her knee had bled through the fabric. She was wearing thin, flowing white pants, making the red stain glaringly obvious.
She frowned.
She didn't need Sebastian to remind her that bleeding onto her clothes was unsightly.
But he had already walked out.
The meeting ended on a sour note once again.
When Preston returned to the room, he shrugged. "Do you think this is over?"
Raelynn couldn't argue with that.
She set down the swab, blinking as she let out a soft laugh. "You don't have to worry about me holding onto lingering feelings for Sebastian, and you don't need to roundaboutly snap me back to reality. I see the truth clearer than anyone."
Preston noted her lack of emotional reaction.
While he was relieved, a bitter taste lingered in his mouth. Raelynn could only talk about it so breezily because reality had beaten her down one too many times.
He sighed. "Sebastian is truly blind."
He had never cherished a woman as incredible as Raelynn.
It served him right that he didn't know about Lily's existence. It was pure karma.
Raelynn didn't have time to dwell on Sebastian.
Her project was at a critical juncture, and she had far too much on her plate. The investment drama was quickly pushed to the back of her mind.
She wouldn't run into Sebastian again until three days later.
