Raelynn could see it clearly—the brazen fearlessness of a woman who knew she was unconditionally favored.
Seraphina clearly had no intention of giving Raelynn a chance to lash out. She brushed past Raelynn and walked out.
Practically skipping toward the man waiting patiently for her outside.
Raelynn stood rooted to the spot for a long time.
It wasn't until Preston called her phone.
That she finally gathered her emotions and headed downstairs.
There was nothing they could do about the Keystone situation.
They had absolutely no way to stop Seraphina from becoming their upstream supplier.
By the time Raelynn exited the building, Sebastian and Seraphina were nowhere in sight. Sometimes, she really wanted to rip Sebastian's chest open just to see how his heart worked. How did he always manage to slide the knife into the exact things she cared about most?
Preston was clearly deeply troubled by the ordeal as well.
He asked her, "Should I drop you off at home first?"
Lost in her own thoughts, Raelynn was about to answer.
Her phone rang.
Still distracted, she answered without checking the caller ID.
"Raelynn, when are you coming home?"
Matilda Croix's cryptic voice echoed through the speaker.
Raelynn snapped to attention.
She pulled the phone away to look at the number.
It was the landline from the house she shared with Sebastian.
Grandma was at their house right now.
Raelynn pressed her lips together. "I just got off work."
"Good. Hurry back then. Grandma is waiting for you."
Matilda's sudden ambush added another layer of frustration. The day's events had already dragged Raelynn's mood to rock bottom, and now she had to deal with this.
Raelynn shot Sebastian a complicated look. The Keystone incident today had undoubtedly dealt her a heavy blow.
Running into each other now meant navigating a minefield of buried resentment and raw tension.
"Raelynn, is work really that busy?" Matilda immediately voiced her disapproval the second she saw her. "If both you and your husband are always working, how do you expect to manage this household and your plans for a child?"
Raelynn walked over. "Yes, there's been a lot going on recently. I've had to work a lot of overtime."
That was her excuse for rarely coming home.
Matilda slapped her hand against the table. "This is completely absurd!"
"Sebastian runs a massive corporation; it's unavoidable for him. But you, Raelynn, shouldn't be pushing yourself like this. What's wrong with staying home and resting? Your priority needs to be the Croix family. You'll have to take maternity leave once you're pregnant anyway, so you might as well just quit your job right now."
Raelynn felt an inexplicable urge to laugh, and she didn't hold back. "Grandma, we've basically finalized our divorce. Are you seriously suggesting I quit my job for him?"
Why was it always the woman expected to sacrifice her life and burn herself out for the family?
Even if her career wasn't on the same scale as Sebastian's, what gave them the right to demand she abandon it?
Matilda sensed the sudden, sharp edge in Raelynn's demeanor. She hesitated for a moment before scowling. "But a promise is a promise. Do I need to remind you both of our deal?"
