Leo was clearly here to beg for a favor. Hearing her blunt rejection, he froze, his face shifting into a mask of pure shock.
Uninterested in wasting another breath on him, Raelynn looked away, her gaze drifting toward the direction Ian had gone.
Leo had anticipated that Raelynn might give him some attitude, but her sheer dismissal still made his blood boil. Grinding his teeth, he snapped, "Fine, even if you won't do me this favor, you still have to manage the mess with the Croix family, don't you? Just go back and tell Cameron that you and Seb are solid. Clear things up for Sera, and we can all have some peace."
In Leo's mind, even if it didn't solve the problem permanently, it would at least buy them some temporary quiet.
Raelynn felt like she was genuinely discovering new depths of human stupidity. A scoff escaped her lips. "Why don't you go tell Cameron that you're actually Seraphina's lover, and Sebastian is just taking the heat for you? To keep the peace, you'd be willing to graciously hand Seraphina back to him. Wouldn't that be a much better story?"
Leo's face turned a dangerous shade of purple. The fact that she had managed to verbally eviscerate him without a single curse word left him suffocating on his own rage.
Raelynn ignored him completely, shifting her injured foot and leaning further away from him, half-afraid his sheer idiocy might be contagious.
Fortunately, the drama in the side lounge hadn't spilled over. The government officials were steadily arriving in the main hall, blissfully unaware of the conflict.
As the secondary guest of honor for the night, Raelynn quickly drew a crowd. People flocked to greet her, eager to rub elbows with the legendary Professor of Exceptional Merit. She expertly navigated through two rounds of networking before finally finding Ian to tell him she needed to leave due to her ankle.
She had fulfilled her social obligations and given the Hudson family the prestige they needed; the gala was a resounding success.
Ian offered to drive her home.
"No, tonight is the grand opening for Rosewood, you can't leave yet," Raelynn insisted. "I'll ride back with Chloe."
Cordelia didn't press him, simply adding, "This Raelynn girl really is remarkable. To achieve all this at twenty-seven... her future is limitless." She patted Ian's shoulder. "The Croix family certainly has a sharp eye to pick a wife so formidable. But it's obvious that Mr. Croix and Raelynn are at the absolute end of their marriage. Stepping in now wouldn't be stealing; it's just the survival of the fittest."
In their world, whether someone had been married before was trivial. They operated like corporate headhunters—they wanted the best, regardless of the baggage.
Ian still didn't reveal that Raelynn was Lily's mother. He simply accepted his mother's praise for the woman he cared about and nodded. "I know."

After getting Lily settled into bed at her apartment, Raelynn took out her phone. Just to be safe, she blocked every single number associated with the Croix family estate on iMessage and her contacts.
With Cameron out of prison, she knew their household was about to turn into a war zone, and she refused to let their toxicity bleed into her peace.

I think for as slow as the beginning was, their turning point is just so fast... really hope we actually get to read about R and S and their rekindle.... we did not read 950 pages for their story to be sidelined. Im for this sideline story, but it if it's to separate from the main characters and their story, please make it separate book....

I really like Zella, she is becoming a good friend to Raelynn. Ian needs to go. The relationship with Chloe is confusing. Some chapters they are cousins, sometimes they're sibling. A little confusing....
Julians role as big brother- I feel comes from a genuine place, but in a relationship thats is just as stained as Raelynns and Sebastians. It hard for me to connect to his big brother role as he too was such a problem before. And while they talked a little bit, the conversation did not give me the believe there was resolution between Raelynn and Julian. For a brute, he should make his feelings clear about the situation to Raelynn and then step back, until there is more foundation for him to stand on....
Knife in my heart. I hurt for Raelynn. She has made it this far, but how much does she have in her, everyone has a breaking point. Some back of me hopes the author is joking to lighten the mood after so many intense chapters, but thats not this kind of story or couple....
My heart cannot take this. This, cannot be how it ends with these too. They need resolution with each other. Raelynn needs to be more humanize with Sebastian. We know she is hurt, but this is the branch. She needs all these answers, if not for them to be together, then for Lily to have both her parents. Stop with the mind games Raelynn!...
Its like the story is just repeating itself...
Timeline is getting lost for me. So many treasured little memories Raelynn has but yet, he was gone for years ? Anyways... still rooting for them! These two need a heart to heart. Lily "forgetting" someone, not possible in this day and age and I hope thats not their storyline....
Sebastian, the man of few words.... needs to find all the words! Needs to fight for her! On note, seven years seems like a long time for this master plan (which I am sure goes back much farther). Rereading this novel, and it seems like everything has played out in a 5-8 month time span. And I feel like all Sebastian's doings/ plan have not been revealed. I hope we get to see the whole picture and have the resolutions we hope. But seven years of mistreatment, I just don't see Raelynn fully coming back. If these was 2-3 years, maybe, and I know it changes some characters around, but it would still work. Rooting for them!...
