That night, Raelynn barely slept.
Her dreams were haunted by the dark, intense look on Sebastian's face during their confrontation about the baby. It left her waking up in cold sweats.
Even though she had the divorce papers and the matter should have been closed, the fact that Sebastian now knew she had given birth stirred up a deep, relentless anxiety.
In her nightmare, Sebastian had found Lily. He had cornered Raelynn, his eyes bloodshot, demanding, "Is she my child? Why did you lie to me? The Croix bloodline cannot be left to wander the outside world."
She jerked awake, her heart hammering against her ribs. She immediately grabbed her phone and frantically texted Professor Alistair Finch to check on Lily.
Alistair quickly replied: "My sweetie is already up and off to school. Did you think she was going to vanish into thin air?"
Raelynn let out a long breath, her tense muscles finally relaxing. She had been on edge for too long, the fear and insecurity deeply embedded in her subconscious.
She had no idea what kind of chaos had erupted at the Croix estate the previous night, but she knew it wouldn't be pretty. Sebastian was going to have a hell of a time cleaning up that mess.
She had originally braced herself for Sebastian to completely destroy her the moment he suspected she'd had another man's baby during their marriage. Instead, they had simply engaged in the most catastrophic, explosive argument of their seven-year relationship.
She had finally seen the absolute cold-blooded sharpness at his core. His words had been laced with poison, slicing her to ribbons without shedding a single drop of blood.
But none of that mattered anymore. She had achieved her goal.
After washing up, Raelynn headed straight to the research lab at Kingsford Medical University. With her new title official, she needed to integrate into the research team, and there was a major faculty meeting on the schedule today.
When she arrived, she saw the doctoral students of the other professors, but Seraphina Vance was nowhere to be found. Sebastian had pulled strings to get Seraphina transferred under Professor Yates, but she had apparently taken the day off.
Raelynn felt a profound wave of relief. Thank god she had finalized the divorce and gotten the certificate before all this blew up.
