Raelynn had absolutely reached her limit.
She whipped back around, her voice dripping with ice. "You let your grandson openly parade his mistress around, but you have the audacity to stand here and lecture me about duty? Whether the Croix family lives or dies from this point forward has absolutely nothing to do with me!"
Matilda stared in shock. This was the first time Raelynn had ever spoken to her with such open venom.
Her face flushed with aristocratic fury. "Is this how you speak to your elders? Has the Croix family not treated you well enough?"
Just as she said it, Evelyn happened to be walking past and caught the tail end of the manipulative guilt trip.
Evelyn marched straight over, grabbing Raelynn's wrist and pulling the younger woman firmly behind her. She looked down her nose at Matilda with total disgust.
"The feudal era is over. Do you still think you're some untouchable empress?" Evelyn spat. "What exactly have you contributed to society other than hoarding resources to survive to this miserable age? By what right do you demand people obey your every whim? You're nothing but a disrespectful old relic."
Raelynn froze in awe. No one had ever fiercely shielded her like this before.
Matilda's face turned a dangerous shade of gray the moment she recognized Evelyn. Even in their youth, Evelyn had always overshadowed her. Evelyn had never acted like a proper, demure lady; she was brash, broke the rules, and infuriated the high society elite. And apparently, she was just as insufferable in her old age.
Evelyn couldn't have cared less about Matilda's outrage.
She tightened her grip on Raelynn. "A good elder is a blessing to the younger generation. But energy vampires like this old hag will drain you dry. Stay as far away from her as you possibly can."
Matilda was shaking so hard she looked like she might collapse.
Ignoring the trembling matriarch entirely, Evelyn practically marched Raelynn out of the building. Raelynn followed obediently, letting herself be pulled along.
It wasn't until they were safely outside in the cool night air that Evelyn finally stopped cursing out the Croix family.
Raelynn's chest felt incredibly tight, overwhelmed by a sudden rush of emotion. Evelyn acted like a fiercely protective grandmother going to bat for her cub. For the first time in years, Raelynn actually felt what it was like to be protected by family.
"Listen to me, Raelynn," Evelyn said softly, her sharp eyes softening. "The Croix family is a den of demons wearing human skin. Those old-money elite families have no concept of humanity or warmth. A girl as brilliant as you shouldn't be trapped in their house, being ground down and abused. I know I'm overstepping, but I'm going to give you a piece of advice."
She paused, looking deeply into Raelynn's eyes.
