Sebastian was "chasing" her away.
Raelynn understood the underlying message perfectly.
He didn't want her intruding on their private gathering.
But he didn't need to go out of his way to keep his distance or shoo her off. She hadn't planned on joining them anyway.
Raelynn turned to Professor Robert. "Thank you. Please feel free to reach out to me whenever you have time."
Professor Robert had to settle for a quick cheek kiss with Raelynn. "Will do."
Raelynn walked away without looking back.
With things as they were.
Seraphina's report was practically guaranteed to pass without a hitch.
Even if Professor Robert had to hold her hand through it, the outcome would be the same.
As for Cameron trying to corner her into an alliance and harassing her earlier, Raelynn obviously wasn't going to be presumptuous enough to bring it up with Sebastian.
Sebastian wouldn't care.
She would just handle whatever came her way.
When the weekend arrived.
Raelynn went to the mall and ordered a custom Go board from a specialty shop.
Then she called Old Mr. Flynn.
They had exchanged numbers previously, and she figured he hadn't called out of fear of interrupting her busy schedule, even though he knew about her new position as the Professor of Exceptional Merit and likely wanted to congratulate her.
Raelynn felt it was necessary to take the initiative and visit the elderly man.
Leo was Leo.
Old Mr. Flynn was entirely different.
When he picked up, the old man sounded delighted. "Raelynn, my dear! Do you have some free time?"
He knew full well how swamped she must be with her new role.
Raelynn smiled. "Just about. Are you free right now?"
"Of course! Grandpa will send you an address. My restaurant, The Pike & Perch, just got a fresh catch in the last two days. I've been saving it for you. Come over and have a taste."
Raelynn agreed.
The address he sent wasn't in the city.
It was on a mountain far out in the suburbs.
Sebastian had probably been taking a walk with the old man. Seeing her arrive, his expression remained as unreadable as ever. He was always impossible to decipher.
Raelynn simply nodded. "I just got here."
The old man ushered her in. "The kitchen is already preparing the fish. Caught fresh and cooked right away. It's absolutely delicious."
As he spoke, he seemed to suddenly remember his manners, waving Sebastian over and saying to Raelynn, "You've met Mr. Croix, haven't you? At my birthday banquet."
Raelynn nodded.
She had no intention of saying hello.
Neither did Sebastian.
They didn't even exchange a glance, acting colder than actual strangers.
Seeing that they clearly weren't close, and having been semi-retired for years and thus out of touch with high society gossip, the old man didn't push the introductions.
He turned to Sebastian. "You didn't bring your wife today. You'll have to bring her over to try the food sometime."
A faint smile touched Sebastian's lips, and he nodded. "I will."
Raelynn caught that fleeting smile.
She knew exactly who he meant by "wife."
