Raelynn met his intense gaze.
Ian straightened back up. "Raelynn, I don't care about your motives for marrying me. That part doesn't matter."
She stared at him in shock. "But if we do this, it won't be out of love. It would literally just be a marriage of convenience."
Terrified he was misunderstanding the gravity of the arrangement, she stressed, "I refuse to lie to you just to get custody of Lily. I can't honestly say I have romantic feelings for you, and we wouldn't be living together like a real couple. Once Lily's paperwork is finalized, we would probably just file for divorce."
She preferred to lay all her cards brutally on the table.
She freely admitted that this drastic move was entirely triggered by the Croix family backing her into a corner.
This was her only avenue to regain control of her life without strings attached, and she owed Ian complete transparency.
Ian listened quietly, his eyes dropping to her hands, which were twisting nervously in her lap as she scrambled to explain herself.
"It doesn't matter," he repeated smoothly.
Raelynn's remaining arguments instantly died in her throat.
She had completely run out of ammunition.
Ian was being impossibly accommodating.
He walked back around his desk and sat facing her. "Instead of worrying about holding me back or planning our future divorce, why not look at it differently? We take our time, see if we can find a comfortable rhythm together. Maybe we wouldn't even need to split up. We could just give Lily a stable, happy home."
Raelynn froze.
She had never even entertained that angle.
Ian slid a sleek bottle of water across the desk toward her. "Furthermore, you don't need to carry any guilt. You aren't using me. Given your current professional status, an alliance between us is actually mutually beneficial. You don't owe me a thing."
He had flawlessly anticipated and dismantled every single one of her insecurities.
He was perfectly fine with being a pawn, completely okay with a marriage of convenience, and absolutely willing to sign divorce papers whenever she wanted out.
Of course, he also left the door wide open for another option: staying married and allowing real feelings to grow.
His stance was crystal clear.
Raelynn fell into a thoughtful silence.
Ian didn't push her, simply sitting with her in the quiet room.
