Sweet dimples popped on her cheeks.
Sebastian stood there, captivated by the sight.
His mind violently snapped back to a memory from over a decade ago.
There had been another girl back then, gently coaxing him to take his medicine and clean his wounds. And whenever he finally gave in and cooperated, she would press her lips together and smile that exact same secret smile.
Mother and daughter...
They were practically carbon copies of each other.
He walked over.
He sat down in the tiny chair right next to Lily.
He didn't say a word.
Lily paused her building, looking up at him. "Mister, aren't you going on a date with that lady?"
Sebastian looked at this child—the child his wife had given to Ian Hudson.
His voice was impossibly soft. "Do you mind if I sit here?"
Lily looked back down at her blocks. "Since you asked nicely, I don't mind."
Sebastian realized this little girl had quite a bit of character. She was interesting to talk to. Some kids were just born with a strong, independent streak, and it showed from a very young age.
He didn't say anything else.
Lily, however, kept stealing glances at him.
"Mister, are you sad?"
She could sense it.
There was something bitter and heavy hanging over this man.
She just didn't know the words for it.
Instead of answering, Sebastian reached out to help her find the next piece she needed. "You look a lot like your mother. You have the same big eyes, the same dimples... and you definitely have her personality."
Too smart for her own good, and full of complicated thoughts.
Hearing that she looked like her mom filled Lily with pride. She offered him a generous compliment in return. "You have really good taste, Mister."
Her praise actually managed to draw a real laugh from Sebastian.
He stared at her little face, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "You're a sweet talker, too."
He planned to stop the bleeding first before finding the hotel staff for a first-aid kit, not wanting to waste a single second.
He pressed the fabric against the cut, gently shifting to a clean section of the shirt every few seconds to maintain pressure. It wasn't a severe wound, so the bleeding stopped fairly quickly.
Throughout the entire process, he watched Lily's face.
She didn't cry. She didn't make a single fuss.
"Doesn't it hurt? You're being so brave," he said softly, letting go of her hand. Like a magician, he pulled a band-aid out of his slacks pocket, peeled the backing off, and carefully placed it over the cut. Only then did he pull his shirt back together, re-buttoning it piece by piece.
He didn't care in the slightest about the stark red bloodstains now ruining the expensive white fabric.
Lily answered with total seriousness. "It hurts. But if I cry, Mama's heart will hurt. I love my Mama so much, and I don't want to make her sad. I couldn't bear it."
Her words made Sebastian's fingers freeze on his collar button.
Right in that fragile moment of silence...
Raelynn's panicked voice rang out. "Lily!"
Sebastian stood up and turned toward the sound.
The next second, Raelynn sprinted over. She shoved Sebastian hard in the chest, pushing him away as if he were a monster. She shielded Lily behind her body, glaring at him with red-rimmed, fiercely defensive eyes.

I think for as slow as the beginning was, their turning point is just so fast... really hope we actually get to read about R and S and their rekindle.... we did not read 950 pages for their story to be sidelined. Im for this sideline story, but it if it's to separate from the main characters and their story, please make it separate book....
Author please update more chapters...
I really like Zella, she is becoming a good friend to Raelynn. Ian needs to go. The relationship with Chloe is confusing. Some chapters they are cousins, sometimes they're sibling. A little confusing....
Julians role as big brother- I feel comes from a genuine place, but in a relationship thats is just as stained as Raelynns and Sebastians. It hard for me to connect to his big brother role as he too was such a problem before. And while they talked a little bit, the conversation did not give me the believe there was resolution between Raelynn and Julian. For a brute, he should make his feelings clear about the situation to Raelynn and then step back, until there is more foundation for him to stand on....
Knife in my heart. I hurt for Raelynn. She has made it this far, but how much does she have in her, everyone has a breaking point. Some back of me hopes the author is joking to lighten the mood after so many intense chapters, but thats not this kind of story or couple....
My heart cannot take this. This, cannot be how it ends with these too. They need resolution with each other. Raelynn needs to be more humanize with Sebastian. We know she is hurt, but this is the branch. She needs all these answers, if not for them to be together, then for Lily to have both her parents. Stop with the mind games Raelynn!...
Its like the story is just repeating itself...
Timeline is getting lost for me. So many treasured little memories Raelynn has but yet, he was gone for years ? Anyways... still rooting for them! These two need a heart to heart. Lily "forgetting" someone, not possible in this day and age and I hope thats not their storyline....
Sebastian, the man of few words.... needs to find all the words! Needs to fight for her! On note, seven years seems like a long time for this master plan (which I am sure goes back much farther). Rereading this novel, and it seems like everything has played out in a 5-8 month time span. And I feel like all Sebastian's doings/ plan have not been revealed. I hope we get to see the whole picture and have the resolutions we hope. But seven years of mistreatment, I just don't see Raelynn fully coming back. If these was 2-3 years, maybe, and I know it changes some characters around, but it would still work. Rooting for them!...
