Sebastian was caught entirely off guard.
Shoved hard, his tall frame stumbled backward.
He retreated two steps.
His stance was unsteady.
It was as if his body had suddenly turned to lead, making it impossible to keep his balance.
He lowered his gaze, his brows furrowing slightly.
"What do you think you're doing?" Raelynn shielded Lily. She no longer trusted Sebastian, especially now that he mistakenly believed Lily was her child with Ian Hudson. Letting him get this close to her daughter was out of the question.
It was impossible for her to remain perfectly calm.
Especially when she saw the faint specks of blood on his crisp shirt.
She was genuinely terrified that he might seek revenge.
Sebastian raised a hand, lightly pinching the bridge of his nose to ward off a sudden wave of dizziness.
He finally looked at her. His vision blurred for a fraction of a second, but he clearly caught the absolute, defensive hostility burning in her eyes.
He didn't say a word.
His phone rang, shattering the tense silence.
He answered it.
Seraphina Vance's voice drifted through the receiver. "Sebastian, when are you coming upstairs? I'm not feeling very well. Could you come check on me?"
He didn't spare Raelynn another word.
Turning away, he braced a hand against the nearby railing and walked off with long, measured strides.
Raelynn watched his retreating back as he hurried off to Seraphina.
Only then did her tightly strung nerves finally slacken.
She didn't care about his date tonight, nor did she have the slightest interest in finding out what would happen between them.
She turned to her daughter. "Did he say anything to you? Did he do anything?"
Lily picked up on her mother's anxiety. She held up her hand, showing off a fresh bandage. "No, Mama. I scraped my hand, and that mister helped me clean it up."
"Mama, what are you afraid of?"
The little girl had noticed.
Her mother acted completely different whenever that man was around.
She didn't think friends were supposed to be this tense around each other.
Raelynn froze. She looked down at Lily's hand, deliberately sidestepping the question. "You bled? Was it a lot?"
Given Lily's delicate health, they had always been excruciatingly careful, guarding her fiercely to ensure she never suffered even the slightest scratch.
