Dr. Hayes's question was far too piercing to brush off or pivot away from.
Yet Sebastian's expression didn't shift in the slightest as he met the older woman's eyes.
Raelynn stood there, momentarily frozen.
She couldn't help but feel that... this question was essentially a form of self-humiliation.
Over this extended period, she had gathered enough concrete answers through countless events and subtle details. She didn't need anyone else to pry a confession out of him on her behalf.
Everyone in the room was well aware of her past relationship with Sebastian.
As a result, the atmosphere—which had just been crackling with hostility—took another sharp turn.
Seraphina instinctively frowned. Was that even a question?
The silence dragged out, thickening the tension.
But Sebastian, the man in the hot seat, remained utterly unhurried and unfazed, as if he already held an absolute truth in his heart and felt no need to feign contemplation.
Just as his lips parted to speak, Raelynn suddenly turned to Dr. Hayes. "Mr. Croix and I have completely settled our emotional baggage," she said earnestly. "He's putting all his effort into helping Seraphina eliminate future threats because he cares about her safety above all else. I have enough self-awareness to recognize that. Even if he had other thoughts..."
She curved her lips into a faint, dismissive smile. "...it has nothing to do with me."
She didn't care.
She wasn't interested.
And she absolutely did not need her ex-husband's so-called pity.
Raelynn chose to speak those difficult truths in Sebastian's place.
After all, they were in front of the Yves family.
Seraphina was on the verge of officially becoming the heiress of this household. If Sebastian explicitly admitted that he felt zero sympathy for his ex-wife, it would paint him as a ruthless, heartless man.
That image wouldn't do him any favors either.
And she wasn't about to wait around for Sebastian to publicly deny her.
She might as well take control of the narrative herself.
