She stopped dead in her tracks.
"Is something wrong?" Raelynn asked, confused.
Dr. Hayes's expression shifted dramatically, and she hurried over to the jade exhibition area. She stopped in front of one of the display cases, her eyes locked onto a specific piece of jade with feverish intensity.
Raelynn followed her.
The case was filled with various jade artifacts, most of them looking quite similar to the untrained eye.
She had never studied the finer details of jade, so she didn't see anything particularly special about it.
"Did one of these catch your eye?" Raelynn asked.
Dr. Hayes's breathing grew shallow. Her eyes were wide with a mix of joy, disbelief, and shock. "The amulet... the Yves family amulet. It's this one!"
Raelynn was stunned.
Following her gaze, she spotted a piece of Imperial Green jade.
Even to the naked eye, its flawless clarity and vibrant color proved it was top-tier, and its placement dead center in the display signaled its immense value.
"You mean this one?"
Raelynn didn't hesitate. She unlocked the cabinet, took the amulet out, and handed it to Dr. Hayes. "It's fine. You can hold it and take a closer look."
She thought the whole amulet saga had ended when she exposed Seraphina's fake.
She hadn't expected this kind of twist today.
Dr. Hayes was reeling. She hurriedly pulled out her reading glasses, slid them on, and turned the jade over and over in her trembling hands.
After the fake amulet incident, she wasn't about to jump to conclusions.
Even though every instinct screamed that it was real, that it was the exact piece she had custom-ordered all those years ago, she looked at Raelynn and took a shaky breath. "My dear Raelynn, this is an incredible favor to ask, and I never expected to find this here... but could you lend this to me for a couple of days? Or I can just buy it for whatever price the shop lists!"
Raelynn could see how desperate the older woman was.
This meant there was a real lead on the missing Yves family heiress.
Tracking the origins of this amulet could give them the clues they needed.
But Raelynn felt a pang of helplessness. "I'm really not in charge here yet. Let me call Sebastian."
She noticed Dr. Hayes gripping something in her hand.
But her fingers were wrapped so tightly around it that it was impossible to see what it was.
The manager quickly stepped in. "I can take that for you. I'll have it boxed up, and you can take it with you to see Old Mr. Winslow."
Dr. Hayes nodded.
With the manager blocking her view, Sierra only caught a brief flash of brilliant green before it was tucked away.
Dr. Hayes followed the manager to process the paperwork for borrowing the item.
Raelynn checked the time.
Her grandfather should be awake by now.
Just as she turned around, a venomous voice echoed from behind her.
"Raelynn!"
