Raelynn instantly put the pieces together.
So this was the emergency Sebastian had sprinted out for?
"Didn't they say they got hit by a car?"
"Bullshit!" Chloe exploded. "My reflexes were completely fine! That little terror was treating the main road like his personal playground. If I hadn't swerved to save his life, it would have been a real disaster! And you know what Seraphina told the cops? She said I was speeding, that it was a hit-and-run, and that I physically assaulted her! That's why we got dragged down to the station!"
Chloe had been furious with the brat, but after making sure Lily was okay, she had stepped out of the car to handle the situation. Seraphina had instantly marched up and shoved her.
Chloe obviously wasn't the type to take that lying down, so she shoved back.
And just like that, Seraphina spun it as "physical assault."
Realizing Lily was still in Raelynn's arms, Chloe awkwardly crouched down and covered the little girl's ears so she wouldn't hear the swearing.
Lily blinked her huge, watery eyes and gave Chloe a sweet, curved smile.
Chloe's heart melted into a puddle.
Raelynn thought back to Seraphina's phone call. She had sounded so victimized, so desperately injured that she just had to summon Sebastian to her rescue.
But reality was a different story.
"The cops are trying to pull the surveillance footage right now, but Seraphina is swearing up and down that I'm completely at fault. She's demanding I be punished."
Chloe forced her anger down for Lily's sake, but her voice was still shaking with rage. If it weren't for that unruly brat running wild, Lily wouldn't have been terrified into a fever, and she wouldn't have smashed her head!
"Ms. Hudson, the other party went to the hospital for an injury assessment. Since it's a minor traffic incident, we highly recommend the two of you negotiate a settlement," an officer said, walking over to them.
Raelynn frowned. "What about the surveillance footage?"
The officer shook his head. "That particular spot happens to be a blind spot for the cameras. We have to try pulling footage from a few streets down to piece it together. It's going to take some time."
"Are you kidding me? A luxury hotel that massive has a camera blind spot right out front?" Chloe scoffed, not buying that excuse for a second.
But...
"Sebastian went to help her handle it," Raelynn said, her voice dropping to a dead calm.
Chloe choked on her next words, instantly understanding what Raelynn meant.
If Seraphina wanted to play the victim, making hotel security footage vanish was child's play for a man like Sebastian Croix.
Raelynn took a deep breath. Crouching down, her trembling fingers gently brushed the swollen lump on Lily's forehead. "Call them."
The officer made the call, and this time, it went through immediately.
But it wasn't Seraphina who answered. Sebastian's cold, indifferent voice drifted through the speaker. "Apologies. I was dealing with a wound and missed the call."
Raelynn's fists clenched on instinct.
He was micromanaging every single detail for Seraphina's family, while his own flesh-and-blood daughter, terrified, bruised, and feverish, was held hostage in a police station waiting for his royal pardon!
Seraphina's voice echoed in the background, sharp and unyielding: "No forgiveness, no settlement! My brother is traumatized! I want her locked up!"
Raelynn stared at the phone. She waited for Sebastian's response.
Finally...
The man's deep, steady voice came through the receiver. "Then that is what we'll do."
Raelynn's heart plummeted into a bottomless abyss, hitting the dirt only to be violently crushed under his heel.
Once again, she was forced to witness her husband's limitless devotion to another woman.
The officer realized things were escalating fast and tried to intervene. "Sir, why don't you come down to the station so we can resolve this face-to-face?"
