I saw Kirby stiffen visibly. He knit his brows and fixed me with a look of bone-chilling coldness—a tone I had never heard from him before. "What did you say?"
I knew I’d played the right card. I let out a deliberate sigh, sounding a bit petulant. "That intel is heavy enough for you, right? I was actually going to tell Leslie directly, but I figured I’d do you a favor. I overheard him whispering with the butler; they mentioned Leslie, but I couldn't catch the details. They were being too cautious."
The moment the words left my mouth, Kirby’s expression turned utterly grim.
His hands clenched into fists, and his jawline was so tight it looked painful. He looked terrifying, like a volcano on the verge of an eruption. The temperature in the entire office seemed to plummet.
After a long silence, he spoke in a slow, detached voice. "Understood. You can leave now."
That was it? I come here out of the goodness of my heart to warn him, and he just brushes me off?
I wasn't about to leave just yet. I lingered, dawdling by the desk. "Kirby, about me and Kelly... you have to help me keep that under wraps."
Kirby’s face remained dark and aloof. When he spoke, his voice was thick with disdain for her. "That woman Kelly is trouble. She’s nearly driven Leiss to his grave. You’d be wise to stay away from her."
I scowled. Who did he think he was?
I snapped back immediately, "Leiss was the one who screwed up first! His regrets don't mean a thing now. Why shouldn't someone else be allowed to pursue her? We’re in love. Long live true love!"
Seeing his brick-wall expression, I realized he had zero intention of helping me. I let out a sharp huff and turned on my heel.
Seriously, I shouldn't have bothered coming. No good deed goes unpunished.
Malach followed protocol and escorted me out. As we walked down the corridor, I couldn't help but grumble under my breath. "No wonder Leslie doesn't want anything to do with him. With a temperament like that, what woman could put up with him?"
Malach paused. "Alpha Kirby is very serious about Miss Leslie."
I caught his drift immediately. He was basically saying Kirby wasn't nearly as "serious" about me. What a silver-tongued Beta.
I let out a cold snort and glanced at him, switching topics. "Kirby knows everything Marcus is doing, so why hasn't he made a move yet?"
Malach offered a polite, professional smile—the kind used for standard diplomatic platitudes. "Within the Crimson Moon Pack, Kirby still respects Alpha Marcus. Until the old man actually acts, Kirby won't make a move."
