The drive from Evershade City to Alderwick took about four hours. Vivienne slept through the entire journey, waking up as they arrived at the old Ravenshire family estate.
Bianca rubbed her eyes, peering out the window while nudging Vivienne with one hand. “Vivienne, wake up! We’re here!”
“Here where?” Vivienne slowly sat up, her mind still foggy from sleep.
Bianca was remarkably patient. “We’re at the old Ravenshire estate. Look, someone's coming out to meet us.”
The estate had been notified of their arrival and had people waiting at the entrance.
Benedict got out first and directed the bodyguards with the luggage. Just then, an elderly woman in a simple, traditional gown emerged from the main gate, supported by a caregiver.
Benedict’s eyes widened slightly, and he hurried forward. “Grandma Crowhurst, what are you doing out here?”
The old woman had watched Caspian grow up and was now eighty-five years old. She had been managing the Ravenshire estate in Alderwick for decades.
Marissa and Tessa quickly got out of the car and greeted her politely.
Through the car window, Bianca pointed at the old woman. “That’s elder Mrs. Crowhurst,” she whispered to Vivienne. “Even my uncle and mom have to call her ‘Grandma’ respectfully. I heard she’s really strict and ridiculously old-fashioned. We have to be careful.”
Vivienne’s gaze passed through the glass, resting on elder Mrs. Crowhurst, and her thoughts drifted far away.
She had always thought the old matriarch disliked her. She was always so severe, criticizing her for not eating like a proper lady, for not walking with enough grace and elegance. Her laughter was wrong, her tears were wrong. Back then, Vivienne felt that even her breathing was a mistake.
Until one day, she and Bianca had another explosive argument. Bianca had pointed a finger at her nose and mocked her for being an unwanted child. In the month since they’d arrived in Alderwick, Talia had called Bianca every day, but Vivienne had been forgotten. Serena Lowe had never called her once.
Bianca had twisted the knife. “Your mother doesn't like you at all. She only likes your prim and proper little sister. Who would like you anyway? You little beggar, you're annoying no matter where you go. Even your name is awful! Who is named after flowers and plants these days? You’re just as common as your name.”
“A blend of grace and fire. Your grandmother was a noble queen her entire life. This name was her greatest wish for you.
“Child, you are not unloved. There are just many ways to show love. You are too young to see it now, but one day, when you're older, you will understand.”
Looking back now…
When Mrs. Crowhurst had scolded her for her table manners, the entire table had been filled with her favorite dishes from her hometown in Vindrell City. When she had forced her to learn to walk and sit like a lady, the shoes on her feet contained insoles the matriarch had hand-stitched, one thread at a time. Every time Bianca finished a call with Talia, a bowl of sweet soup from Vindrell City would appear in her room. And on the countless times she’d woken up under a tree, the old woman would be sitting beside her, fanning her with a bamboo fan.
Bianca, still clueless, saw the old woman's embroidered shoes, which were a size smaller than normal, and her expression grew grave. “We're doomed! This old lady really is a relic. Is she going to be even harder to deal with than Grandpa?”
Vivienne pinched the bridge of her nose and flicked Bianca on the back of the head.
