Bianca’s gaze hardened with determination.
Damien Whitmore had once had a heart-to-heart with her just like this. He said he couldn’t bear to be without her and her mother, that he wanted their family to be together forever, and that he would always be good to her.
Back then, she had asked Damien the same question: “What do I need to do?”
Damien had told her, “Later tonight, sneak out and hide in the back hills for a night. That will scare your mother, and she’ll agree to whatever you say.”
In the same situation, Vivienne was telling her she didn’t need to do anything but grow up well.
She might be rebellious, but she wasn’t completely clueless.
Bianca looked down at the messy pile of comics on the floor, a faint smile gracing her lips.
Try to become a better person?
The future looked promising.

Considering their long journey, elder Mrs. Crowhurst had lunch sent to their room.
Bianca had woken up early and hadn’t slept a wink on the way. After getting the answers she wanted, she felt a sense of relief. She grew sleepy after lunch, and with a single motion, she flopped onto the bed and fell asleep.
Revisiting this old place, even Vivienne’s usual laziness couldn’t take hold. After lunch, she took Little Stray out for a walk in the gardens.
She used to truly hate this place, finding fault with everything she saw. But now, with a different mindset, she suddenly realized the old estate wasn’t just the deep, dark memory she held. The central courtyard was open on all four sides, allowing sunlight to pour in. The greenery stood tall and elegant, and shadows scattered wherever the light landed.
The sound of cicadas here was even louder than at Obsidian Estate, and the scent of summer was even stronger.
Vivienne stood in the courtyard for a long time, and for a moment, it felt as if time had split. She could almost see a twelve-year-old girl standing across from her, their eyes meeting.
That little girl had countless puppet strings attached to her back. She looked up at the sky above, lost, resentful, and numb.

The sun soon set, and the sky lit up with a red glow.
“If you like it, eat more. Make yourselves at home,” elder Mrs. Crowhurst said.
“Then I won’t be polite, Great-grandmother.”
Every time Bianca took a bite of something she found delicious, she would put some on Vivienne’s plate. She was truly making herself at home.
Although Vivienne looked annoyed, she silently ate the offerings in her bowl.
The old woman ate very little, only occasionally moving her utensils.
Soon, Bianca was full. She rubbed her round belly. “I’m so full. I didn’t expect the food here to be even better than at Obsidian Estate.”
The matriarch took a silk handkerchief from her sleeve to wipe her mouth. Bianca froze, taken aback. What era was this? Who still used a handkerchief?
“Are you finished?”
Bianca stood up. “I’m finished. I’m completely stuffed, Great-grandmother.”
