Vivienne casually pulled out a paper napkin.
The old woman’s expression suddenly clouded, her tone turning serious. “It’s an old family rule not to discipline children before a meal. But since dinner is over, you will stay and listen to the rules.”
Bianca was startled by the matriarch’s abrupt change in demeanor and looked at Vivienne in confusion. Vivienne calmly wiped her mouth. As expected, what was meant to happen would happen.
“Since your grandfather entrusted you to me, I must live up to that trust,” the old woman said. “I didn’t want to lay down rules on your first day, but that meal was completely improper. It shows how undisciplined you usually are.”
Bianca was at a loss. She retorted, “Dinner was just fine, wasn’t it? What was so improper about it?”
The matriarch folded her hands in her lap and looked up at Bianca. “Dinner is at six. I had you notified at five, yet you arrived at six-thirty. Since when is it acceptable for the younger generation to keep their elders waiting at a family dinner?”
“That’s because I was asleep!” Bianca argued. “Besides, we didn’t ask you to wait! If you were hungry, why didn’t you just eat first?”
The matriarch shook her head, reiterating, “This is a family dinner.”
Bianca was still not convinced. “So what if it’s a family dinner? I eat like this at the Whitmore estate, and my grandpa never says anything. What right do you have to criticize me?!”
“The Whitmores are the Whitmores, and the Ravenshires are the Ravenshires,” the old woman stated. “If no one at the Whitmore estate taught you manners, then your great-grandmother has an even greater duty to teach you.”
Bianca couldn’t hear a word of it, finding the old-fashioned woman incredibly annoying. “Fine! If you can’t stand it, then let’s not eat together anymore. I’ll eat in my room. I don’t want to have to look at your sour face anyway.”
The matriarch frowned. “Lunch was an exception, out of consideration for your long journey. With family elders present, there is no eating separately. From now on, dinner is served at six o’clock sharp, and you must be seated ten minutes prior. Your dining etiquette today was also unacceptable. Starting tomorrow, I will teach you, step by step.”
“Who wants you to teach them? What century is this? Still clinging to those feudal traditions!”
Thump—
Vivienne nodded. “Understood.”
It was only after she married Alaric that she learned being the wife of a man from a prestigious family wasn’t so easy. She often embarrassed herself due to her lack of proper etiquette, and those who looked down on her would even mock Caspian for it. They must have truly disliked Alaric to saddle him with such a foolish and embarrassing wife.
Of course, her willingness to learn now wasn’t because she still coveted the position of Alaric’s wife. It was because, during her walk in the garden today, she had a sudden realization.
The future is determined by the present, and at the very least, she now had a grasp on every present moment.
So why not go and meet the better version of her future self?
