VIP Room 2, Alderwick Hospital.
The white curtains fluttered, and a gentle breeze rustled the green leaves outside, casting dappled shadows on the windowsill.
Vivienne was still asleep. Caspian stared at the walkie-talkie in his hand, remaining silent for a full three minutes.
Vivienne had secretly slipped it to him before she passed out. Having navigated the treacherous waters of high society for so many years, Caspian immediately knew something was amiss.
"Grandfather…"
Vivienne's eyelids fluttered, showing signs of waking.
Caspian immediately composed himself and stood up to pat her shoulder. "Vivienne, Grandfather's here."
"Grandfather!" Vivienne's eyes flew open. Her dark pupils constricted, and her body trembled uncontrollably, as if she'd had a terrible dream.
Caspian thought she was just frightened and turned to press the call button by the bed.
Vivienne stared at her surroundings for a moment, quickly realizing where she was. She grabbed Caspian's hand. "Grandfather, I'm fine. I just had a nightmare."
Seeing the cold sweat on her forehead, Caspian's heart ached. "It's my fault. I failed to protect you all."
Vivienne shook her head, and her eyes inadvertently fell on the walkie-talkie in Caspian's hand. "Grandfather…"
She had found the device on the assailant. Vivienne knew she didn't have the means to trace the person's identity with just a walkie-talkie, so she had decisively handed it over to Caspian.
However, doing so was tantamount to admitting that she was the one who had killed him.
Caspian noticed her gaze and smiled, patting her shoulder. "It's alright. Grandfather is here."
The words were heavy with unspoken promises.
Vivienne was taken aback. "That's it? Don't you have any questions for me about what happened?"
So, he was protecting her unspoken secrets.
Vivienne’s eyes welled up. "Before I jumped, I grabbed Cedric's gun and said a lot of awful things to Alaric."
At the time, everyone must have thought she was crazy. But looking back now, anyone clever would see that it was all too coincidental.
Caspian smiled. "I know. It's all part of the act, remember? I told you—not only will I play along, but I'll have the entire Obsidian Estate follow your lead."
Vivienne was stunned. It wasn't that he didn't know something was off about her; it was that he trusted her unconditionally regardless.
Caspian raised his hand and gently touched her forehead. "I don't ask how it happened. I only look at the result. The result is that you brought Bianca back, and that's enough. You're a good kid, and that's enough, too. A kind and brave child deserves praise, not suspicion."
Vivienne suddenly understood why she had dared to act so erratically in front of Alaric. Her confidence came from Caspian.
In her past life, she had been notorious. Serena had schemed to get her into Alaric's bed. Alaric loathed her, and the rest of the Ravenshire family looked down on her. Only the old man, upon learning that she was genuinely in love with Alaric, had chosen to help her.
