“Mom? Is this the place?”
Isabella, holding a thermos, looked around in disbelief. Was she sure this wasn’t Evershade City’s newly developed park?
Serena couldn’t hide her jealousy. Even when they were sick, the rich were different from ordinary people. This was precisely why she had worked so hard to climb the social ladder.
After leaving Obsidian Estate that day, she had received a wire transfer from the Ravenshire family. Not only that, but shortly after she returned home, the wealthy wives who had previously avoided her started showing up one by one, even offering to lend her money to get by.
At first, Serena was smug, thinking her three years of effort had finally paid off. But gradually, she sensed something was off. It seemed everyone was really interested in her connection to elder Mr. Ravenshire.
After some inquiries, she found out that the photo Isabella had sent in the freshman group chat had gone viral. The upper-class circles were all interconnected, and the wealthy wives had heard the news from their children, which explained their change in attitude toward her.
No one in this world could resist the allure of power and wealth, and Serena was no exception.
Lately, Serena had been out and about with these wealthy women, and her eyes had been opened. Now she was in too deep to ever go back.
In fact, Serena had been in secret contact with Dorian. Last night, he had told her that Vivienne was resting in the hospital after rendering a great service to the Ravenshire family.
Serena immediately smelled an opportunity. She woke up before dawn to make soup, preparing to lay on the charm today.
To get Caspian to pay off her debts, Serena had reluctantly promised to leave Evershade City. But that was just a temporary measure. She had confidence in herself—or more accurately, in the daughter she had carefully molded to be dependent on her. With just a little effort, Vivienne would surely be grateful and fall back under her control.
And if Vivienne desperately begged her to stay, what could the old man possibly say?
Serena adjusted her expression and smoothed her hair. “Do you remember everything I told you before we left?”
Isabella didn’t look happy, but she didn’t dare disobey. “I remember. Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll be good and get on my sister’s good side.”
Serena nodded, satisfied. In a rare, earnest tone, she said, “Just remember, this time she’s a hero to the Ravenshire family. If you can win her over, all your classmates will have no choice but to suck up to you.”
“A hero?” Isabella was confused.
“Serena?” Leander scoffed. The moment he turned, he came face to face with the woman herself.
There was a moment of silence.
The atmosphere instantly turned strange.
Serena quickly regained her composure, striking a pose as she theatrically brushed a stray hair from her forehead. “Mr. Ra—”
Before she could finish, Leander walked right past her without a second glance.
Serena’s face stiffened with embarrassment. She turned to Evelyn. “Miss Ravenshire, what did you mean just now? Is there some misunderstanding?”
Evelyn, still fuming from her encounter with Vivienne, was in no mood for pleasantries. She replied with biting sarcasm, “A misunderstanding? Mrs. Lexton, you really are something else. Using the Lexton family’s charity to raise a bastard and keep a lover on the side. You’re a bottomless pit. It really takes all kinds.”
