"Excuse me?"
Vivienne raised a challenging eyebrow, ready to fire back, only to realize that the top of her head barely reached Alaric's chin.
Seriously, did the Ravenshire men eat fertilizer growing up? By sixteen, they were all well over six feet tall.
"Hey, isn't that the senior who gave the speech on stage the other day? Wow, he is so gorgeous!"
"Wait, isn't that girl next to him the loser from the gifted class? Why would someone like him be walking with her?"
It was peak morning rush hour. Alaric, a towering, ridiculously handsome upperclassman standing amidst a sea of younger students, was incredibly conspicuous. Within seconds, they had drawn a crowd of staring, whispering students.
"I swear I just saw Vivienne step out of the Ravenshire heir's car."
"God, after the massive scandal yesterday, how does she even have the nerve to show her face at school?"
Listening to the murmurs surrounding them, Vivienne forced a bright, sickeningly sweet smile. She reached up and patted Alaric's shoulder. "Let's go, Alaric."
With a joyful twirl, she marched ahead to lead the way.
Alaric lowered his eyes to stare at the spot on his shoulder she had just touched.
Wesley instantly stepped forward, offering a pristine handkerchief. His boss was a mild germaphobe and absolutely loathed being touched by strangers.
It was as if Vivienne had eyes in the back of her head. Her voice drifted back lazily. "If you wipe that shoulder, Alaric, I'm going straight to Grandpa to tell him you're disgusted by me. I'll tell him I never want you to bring me to school again, and you can just go back and face his trial in peace."
In her past life, she had known about his germaphobia. Every time she had to speak to him, she made sure she was freshly scrubbed and perfumed. And yet, the arrogant jerk had still looked at her like she was the dirt on his shoe.
This time around, she wasn't trying to be his wife. She wasn't about to cater to his ridiculous neuroses.
Alaric's hand, which had just begun to lift, slowly lowered back down.
Wesley watched, his heart aching for his boss. How dare this manipulative little brat bully him like this? He pocketed the handkerchief, burning with indignation. "Boss, let me carry the bag."
Alaric looked at Vivienne's retreating figure. He deliberated for a moment, then shook his head. "Leave it." He slung the bright pink backpack casually over one broad shoulder.
In the shade of the track field not far away, Isabella Lexton was laughing with a group of wealthy socialites. Suddenly, one of the girls grabbed her arm, her eyes wide with excitement. "Isabella, isn't that your brother?"
The smile froze completely on Isabella's face.
The girls immediately started begging.
Isabella gripped her bag straps so tightly her knuckles turned white. She forced a painfully fake smile. "Of course. I'll talk to my brother tonight."
The girls cheered, affectionately linking their arms through Isabella's.
"We're here!"
Vivienne snatched her pink bag from Alaric's hand. "You can go back now." She dismissed him with a careless wave, as if sending away a stray dog.
Alaric, having endured a full morning of sheer aggravation, couldn't wait to be rid of her. Without a second glance, he turned on his heel and walked away.
Dozens of students had secretly followed them the entire way. Seeing Alaric personally walk her to the classroom door, they immediately assumed Vivienne was the apple of his eye. Classmates who had never once spoken to her suddenly rushed forward with eager greetings.
"Vivienne, was that the Ravenshire heir? Why did he personally walk you to class?"
The students in the gifted class were all incredibly wealthy or well-connected, but none of them could even dream of comparing to the Ravenshire family. The only reason they had bullied and isolated Vivienne before was because they assumed the Ravenshires despised her and she was a powerless orphan. But now, with the young heir acting as her personal escort, the rumor of her being unloved crumbled instantly.
