Silence stretched between them.
Vivienne stared at the two floating lines of glowing text, momentarily at a loss for words.
After a beat, she turned her head and scanned the rest of the classroom. After sweeping the room two or three times to confirm no one else had character tags hovering over them, she reluctantly brought her gaze back.
Based on the plot, Mina had to be the fake heiress of the Blackthorne family. The real heiress was Alaric's destined female lead, Isolde.
As for Sophia... Vivienne glanced at Mina. During the Evershade City massacre in the novel, Sophia was one of the girls kidnapped. Even though the Everhart family paid the ransom, Sophia never made it back alive. She was brutalized by over a dozen kidnappers and died a horrifying, undignified death.
Three years later, when the kidnappers were finally caught, the truth of why they killed the hostages was revealed.
The kidnappers had given Sophia the ransom note, ordering her to secretly deliver it to her family. They warned her that if she didn't come right back, they would slaughter her best friend.
Seeing how hysterically Mina was crying, Sophia bravely volunteered to give Mina the chance to deliver the note instead. But Mina took the note and never came back. Terrified that Mina would expose their hideout, the kidnappers executed all the hostages.
Sophia and one other girl bore the brunt of their sick rage.
When that confession was released, the Blackthorne family became public enemy number one, and Mina was reduced to a hated pariah, much like Vivienne had been.
Vivienne let out a lazy, cynical smirk. It figured. Any cannon fodder designed to make the female lead look good was universally cursed with the 'vicious' tag. Although Vivienne hadn't survived to see the later chapters, her extensive knowledge of trashy romance novels told her Mina's downfall was entirely orchestrated to pave the way for Isolde's triumphant return.
In short, Mina was a foil for the female lead, just like Vivienne.
The only difference was that Vivienne was the romantic foil, and Mina was the family foil.
"What are you smiling at?"
Mina had no idea what was going through Vivienne's head. Seeing her stare blankly and then offer a mocking smirk ignited her temper.
Vivienne touched her cheek, staring at the glowing green tags above Mina's head. "I'm smiling because I finally found someone who has it worse than me."
At least her own character tags originally started with 'Beauty.' That alone put her leagues ahead of Mina.
It was always good to find someone lower on the totem pole to make yourself feel better.
Mina couldn't decipher a word of that. She went straight for the jugular. "Vivienne, did God put all your stat points into your face and leave your brain entirely empty? Has your gray matter completely atrophied? Can you even comprehend human speech?"
Vivienne nodded thoughtfully. That was a pretty accurate description of her original character.
Sophia looked increasingly uncomfortable and pulled hard on Mina's arm. "Mina, just drop it! Don't..."
Bang!
Before she could finish, the classroom door was violently kicked open. Bianca Whitmore strutted in like she owned the place. Her icy gaze swept over Mina and Sophia before instantly melting into a brilliant, bouncing smile as she ran toward Vivienne.
"Vivi! I transferred classes! We're desk-mates now!"
Vivienne stood up. Bianca instantly grabbed her arm, blinking anxiously.
"Don't worry," Vivienne said softly.
Out in the hallway, Ms. Quinn pulled her around the corner. Her tone was laced with anxiety. "Vivienne. Mrs. Whitmore is here."
Vivienne's expression remained perfectly flat. "Julianne's mother?"
Ms. Quinn nodded. "The school board wants to keep this quiet and reach a private settlement, but they haven't been able to reach your mother at all. Do you have any other emergency contacts?"
She was subtly asking if anyone from the Ravenshire family was willing to step up.
Vivienne shook her head. "No..."
"Who says I can't be reached?"
Talia Ravenshire glided down the hallway in a stunning, deep-crimson dress, a breathtaking Imperial Green jade necklace dripping with diamonds resting against her collarbone. The youngest Ravenshire daughter was known for being flashy, but today's ensemble was blindingly extravagant.
Ms. Quinn froze. "And you are?"
Talia reached out and affectionately stroked Vivienne's hair. "I am so sorry, sweetheart. Mommy was out of the country picking up a special gift for you and couldn't get back in time. Did they treat you terribly?"
With that, she extended a perfectly manicured hand, a massive diamond ring gleaming on her finger. "Hello. I am Vivienne's mother. Now, where is Theresa? I'll be handling the negotiations."
