What happened next?
Vivienne recalled the memory with a heavy sigh.
Even though the drugs had completely scrambled her brain, she vividly remembered wrestling with Alaric for ages, barely managing to pull one side of his robe down before her vision went black and she passed out.
When she woke up, only Grandpa was by her side. Realizing she had made a catastrophic mistake, she clung to his hand, begging for forgiveness.
But Grandpa simply patted her head, asking as casually as if commenting on the weather, "Vivi, do you like Alaric?"
She froze, completely unsure of how to answer. She was too terrified to speak.
Grandpa had already guessed her answer. He let out a long sigh. "If you can't be my granddaughter, then you'll be my granddaughter-in-law. Don't worry, Grandpa is here."
"No, Grandpa, I want to be your granddaughter! I didn't... I... Grandpa, I don't want to get married. I want to be your granddaughter forever."
Grandpa patted her hand gently, his tone weighted with resignation. "Listen to me, Vivi. Someone saw you and Alaric last night. Now the entire social circle knows you two were alone together in a hotel room. Alaric is going into politics; he can't be tainted by an incest scandal."
With red eyes, she tried to explain, "But Grandpa, I was framed! I—"
"I know. Vivi, power is a double-edged sword. There are things even I cannot control. Lia is gone. Cyril is gone too. I can't let anything happen to either of you. So, I plan to announce your engagement to Alaric. It's the best option for both of you."
"Engagement?" She stared at him blankly. "Will Alaric agree? He doesn't like me at all."
Grandpa's answer had been simple: "He will."
Thinking back to that nightmare, Vivienne's mood plummeted. With a heavy sigh, she pulled a mint from her pocket, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth.
The intense blast of peppermint shot straight to her brain, dragging her spiraling thoughts back to reality.
"Wow, this brand is really strong."
