The crisp autumn breeze rippled across the pond, sending soft, shimmering waves over the water's surface.
Alaric looked up, staring blankly at Caspian.
He had always been brilliant. Even when Caspian only offered the slightest hint, Alaric could easily unravel the immense depth of emotion hidden beneath his grandfather's words.
Suddenly, a wave of intense shame washed over him. He was the only one who knew the truth—when others struggled, it was because they were trapped in the game without realizing it. But Alaric was different. He was intentionally letting himself drown.
"Alaric, as long as you are breathing, the world will constantly test you," Caspian said softly. "I don't want you to rip up the entire test just because you made one mistake on the first page. So many people in this world know they can't achieve perfection, yet they still fight tooth and nail to piece together a decent answer. I refuse to watch you bury your own potential like this."
Alaric was quiet for a long time. "Are you talking about Cyril?"
Caspian nodded. "Do you know why Cyril came to see me today? He showed up covered in bruises, carrying a bag full of venomous snakes. Harrison tried to murder him with a pet snake, and when that failed, he hired thugs to corner him at school. All of this happened days ago, but Cyril kept his mouth shut. You're a smart kid. You know exactly why he chose today of all days to finally speak up."
Alaric nodded slowly.
After today's massive riot, the Montclairs were practically guaranteed to show up at the estate tomorrow demanding justice. Because of Ethan Montclair's previous scandal, the Montclairs had been forced to swallow their pride and accept Cyril joining the Ravenshires.
The Ravenshires had already ruthlessly offended the Whitmore family. If they pushed the Montclairs into a corner without a valid reason, the blowback would be severe.
But Cyril's well-timed revelation flipped the script entirely.
Two premeditated murder attempts in exchange for one brutal mob beating. Even if the Montclairs marched up to their front door tomorrow, they would be the ones forced to lower their heads and apologize.
Seeing that Alaric fully understood the political maneuver, Caspian stood up, walked to a corner of the room, and picked up a freshly potted seedling. He handed it to his grandson.
