Edmund Blackthorne stepped out of a vintage Rolls-Royce right next to him.
"Is it? Or are you just going blind in your old age? Looks exactly the same as last year to me."
Rupert, Edmund's loyal assistant, smoothly exited the passenger side and popped open an umbrella to shield his boss from the sun.
Graham shot Edmund a sideways glare. "If I knew you were going to show up and ruin my morning, I would have stayed home."
"Grandpa," Preston Everhart said smoothly, stepping out of the car. He handled himself with perfect poise. "Mr. Blackthorne, please forgive him. Ethan told Grandpa you'd be coming, and he hasn't stopped complaining about it all morning."
Edmund's eyes lingered on Preston for a moment before he let out a hearty laugh.
"Ah, Preston. Haven't seen you in six months. You've grown taller. More handsome too." Edmund shot a mocking glance at the short, rotund Graham. "I guess it's true what they say—even a rotten bamboo shoot can sprout a decent reed."
Graham scoffed loudly. "You're just bitter. Not my fault your family couldn't produce a single capable heir if your lives depended on it."
Preston sighed in exasperation and gave his grandfather's sleeve a gentle tug.
Graham huffed. "When was I ever complaining about him? I woke up in a fantastic mood because I finally have a legitimate excuse to come here and cause trouble for the Ravenshires. What does this toxic old fossil have to do with anything?"
"Mr. Everhart. Mr. Blackthorne."
An elegant, middle-aged man stepped out of a nearby car. Dressed in a sharp tailored suit, Richard Montclair, the current head of the Montclair family, exuded quiet authority.
Victoria Montclair and Harrison followed close behind him. Harrison was wrapped in bandages and had to be carefully lifted out of the car and placed into a wheelchair.
"I apologize for dragging you both into this mess today," Richard said grimly.
